My mum and I journeyed through the rough and tumble of life together, all alone without any help.

I watched her transition from a happily married woman into a woman who fights for love and begs for it in fact. I watched her cry herself to sleep every night, starve herself, and think till her brain almost stopped functioning. She gave in to her wrong side, drenching herself in her bad thoughts and projecting that on her spirit.
My dad died in bed with his mistress and this took a toll on my mum but five years later, I watched her fall in love with my stepdad who brought back the youthful age that had lay dormant within her. He brought back the sparkle in her and it transcended her negativity about love to giving love a chance again but two years down the love line, my stepdad changed. He left her for another woman.
Somehow, her love life was affecting mine and I can see myself having a hostile thought about love which caused my twenty-eight years of living a loveless one.
It breaks my heart to see her drift back into her shell and with the look of things, she’s probably never going to give love a chance ever again.
I knocked on the door gently before pushing it slightly since the door was not locked. The door made a soft squeaky sound and I peeked my head in first before my entire body.
“Hey, mum!” I said and she turned to her side to face me.
“Ken!” she called with a broad smile before sitting up in bed with the duvet covering half of her body and then stretching her hands out in front of her.
One thing Mum would never stop doing is treating me like I’m still a baby. Like a child.
I walked to her and leaned into her arms. She held me tightly in her embrace and then I realized how she reeked of sweat and sick.
“Have you been throwing up?” I asked her as I pulled out of the hug and stared at her face.
She looked ragged and frail. She looked as though she could pass out at any moment as against the broad smile that was on her face.
“I’m fine. I just felt like throwing everything all up so I used the two fingers method,” she giggled.
I sighed not in frustration but in relief. She doesn't have a fever so I placed my palm on her forehead.
“You need a warm bath.”
“I showered last night before I slept.”
“But you don’t look it. I’d just prepare your bath and make you breakfast.”
“Oh, Ken.”
“I insist!”
“Okay, fine,” she replied with a smile.
I walked to her bathroom and prepared her bath. When she walked into the bathroom, I took off her bedspread which reeked of puke and sweat with dirt. I made her bed with a clean fresh bedspread before I helped arrange her things and put things in place before cleaning it all up.
I then made breakfast; bread toast with bacon, seasoned asparagus, and broccoli with grilled steak and sausage.
“What’s for breakfast? Smells like my favorite,” she said as she sat by the dining and I smiled before taking the apron off and then taking the tray with her meal on it.
“I guess you’d see for yourself,” I replied as I walked to her.
As I placed the plate on the table, a broad smile played on her lips again and this time, it seemed genuine as it reached her eyes.
“Thank you, Ken.” She hugged my waist and I lowered my body to place a kiss on her head.
“I am the only lover you need. I would love you rightly, Mum!”
She looked up at my face before pulling out of the hug and grabbing the cutleries. Her countenance changed and her smile faded.
“Did I say something wrong?” I asked as I pulled a chair out and sat in it, staring at her and expecting her response but she gave none except for a little squeezing on my shoulder and a feigned smile.
“You don’t believe that?” I asked and she chuckled with food in her mouth.
“I’m just saying, I shouldn’t be the one you love. You should give your love to a young lady. Don’t lavish it all on me.”
“I insist again, mum!” I said and she nodded, chuckling.
Then, I got up from my seat and walked to the vinyl and the night we met by Lord Huron started playing.
I watched her drop the cutleries in her hands and the expression of shock masked her face.
“Ken,” she called as she slowly got up from the chair with tears welling up in her eyes. “Ken,” she called again as she walked towards me.
“You didn't tell me why you love this soundtrack so much.
“Your dad played this the night we made you,” she giggled with the tears rolling down her cheeks.
I held her hand as we moved to the rhythm of the music, digesting the lyrics and enjoying the tone.
“It was my favorite soundtrack!” she added with a tearful smile.
