Today I’m going to show you a part of Quetepe that I didn’t know about. I left the beach behind and headed down the dirt paths that run alongside the houses—the ones that bring us a little closer to the community, which has remained true to rural traditions such as farming and raising poultry and domestic animals like sheep.
Although these trails are well-defined, the surrounding area is lush with greenery; the vegetation is ever-present, offering pleasant views wherever you look. In addition, the hills serve as a grand backdrop behind some modest homes and others with more modern designs. Quetepe has grown over the last decade; the houses along the road stretch for a considerable distance—I’d say about 400 meters from the beach resort.
A special guest tagged along on this impromptu stroll: Rintintin—that’s what I named the dog who accompanied me the entire way, both there and back, as if he’d known me forever and we shared some kind of connection. I welcomed the company, since he acted like a friendly guide; after all, I was the visitor.
A very funny story happened with Rintintin. On our way back from a long hike, as we approached a dangerous curve, we passed through a field of pumpkins, where a black hen was walking with her chicks—shy and yellow, they huddled close to their mother. I didn’t want to make too much noise while taking pictures because the scene seemed so endearing to me, but just as I was aiming the camera, Rintintín came charging out, chasing the hen, who raised a huge commotion and began fluttering around the field in a panic.
The hen left her chicks and ducked under a fence to take shelter—animal instinct in its most primitive form. Before the scene could get even more chaotic, I whistled at the dog and shouted for him to keep moving; he obeyed and walked off behind me. I found this bond between us incredible, considering we’d only met when I arrived at the beach.
This dog’s companionship will be one of the memories I cherish most; he stayed by my side for at least a couple of hours as we explored the houses and trails near the beachfront, as well as the outer area where most of the tourist accommodations are located.
