Road Trip Day 12: Matjiesfontein
We have now turned and was slowly making our way back home, our 3rd last stop over was the historic town of Matjiesfontein. This town basically consist of the Lord Milner Hotel, I think if it was not for the Hotel, the town would die!! The hotel started out as a hospital for British soldiers during the Boer War!!
This was also the town where the first cricket match between England and South Africa was played.
This hotel is still in the Victorian style, and still is in great condition and well maintained!!
I love the old type stairs, ceilings and lights!!
The Laird's Arms is the hotels, pub, which is quite nice on the inside.
There are a few old style buildings next to the hotel.
There is even a station, with a sign saying it is 195 miles to Cape Town, I wonder why this sign is in miles, as we are using the Metric system here in South Africa?? Even the station is nicely maintained!!
They have a London bus, that does a tour of the town, for free. They say it is the shortest bus tour in South Africa, but I think they can safely say in the world, as the entire tour takes 7 minutes, and that is without going to 2nd gear!! The town is really minute.
The dinning room is also still in the old style and it was really great to eat dinner there!!
We had some great wine and we both had lamb shank for our dinner.
The dessert was also great!!
We really enjoyed our stay in this little town. The town also has 2 museums, which we visited on which I will write in a later post.
