Home Brewed Beer: No 2!!
As you might know, I have started to brew my own beer at home. The one in this post is my second brew, and I was attempting to brew an oatmeal stout!! We were invited to a braai at my brothers house, and this was the opportune moment to test my latest brew. The glasses were chilled in the freezer and the beer poured beautifully.
The beer had a great dark color and a beautiful tan head - just as a stout should have. The beer had a good stout taste a bit hoppy and quite bitter. As I said, I wanted to brew an oatmeal stout, but I could not taste the oats. I think, I added to little oats to the mix. The beer however still tasted great!!
Just look at that head!! I was quite happy with the carbonation, I achieved with this one. I calculated the alcohol content to be 3.15%, thus it was quite light.
Below is the recipe, if you would like to brew this one yourself.
Ingredients:
🍺Belgium Pale Malt: 2.425kg
🍺Pale Chocolate (Fawcett and Sons): 0.15kg
🍺Roasted Barley (Fawcett and Sons): 0.025kg
🍺1 coffee Mug oats
🍺Bravo Hops: 100g
🍺Mangrove Jacks strong ale Yeast M42: 1 packet
🍺Priming Sugar
Method:
🍺Put all the grains in a grain bag, with 10 litter of water in a large pot.
🍺Heat to 60 Celsius 30 min,
🍺Increase heat 67 Celsius for 1 Hour Increase water to 12 litter by sparging through grain.
🍺Then increase heat to a rolling Boil for 1 Hour
🍺Add half hops 15 min into boil and remaining half 15 minutes before end.
🍺Cool down to below 26 Celsius
🍺Ferment 3 weeks
🍺Bottle age 4 weeks (Add priming sugar in the bottle when bottling)
🍺Chill beer to ICE COLD
🍺Chill glass to ICE COLD
🍺Pour beer into glass
🍺Savor every sip!!
The only equipment I used was a large pot, a grain bag, a small hops bag and a fermenting bucket.
