After the introduction of nuclear weapons in the second world war, it has become exponentially harder to pretend like people care about loss of life. On the heels of grasping the power to annihilate millions of people and level cities to the ground, a sense of humanity felt like a dream slipping away right as you woke up. A dream where everything was good and everybody knew you were good.
In the nuclear era, war isn't war. Casualties pile up without a word, because they're not the worst thing that could happen. The cloud of nuclear menace constantly looming just far enough in sight lets us know that it could always be taken to a different level.
So when an 18 year old kid murders 20 of his classmates in cold blood and we can see the warm blood pooling around the still warm bodies on the cold tile floors of classrooms, we are sad. We are so sad and nobody could be sadder about anything because we are just so sad. We want to care so badly that it pours out of us in tweets and stunned rants on Facebook, our rage builds and builds with every new massacre and the emptiness inside us is deafening.
People who genuinely favor legislation to prohibit gun sales (which of course don't work and just create a bigger black market) are constantly letting everyone know how moral they are, but the virtue signaling tops out after a school shooting. The official party line is that the most tragic way to die is to be killed with a rifle (one that looks like it's used in the military, regardless of what it's for) and the most tragic victims are of course children (which I think happens to also be true, but I don't use it to try to exercise control over people's lives.)
In the aftermath of the most recent shooting (Parkland, Florida) the left has been in rare form, expressing their desire for some form of government control of firearms or another. This time, instead of simply accusing people who won't vote for gun control as complicit in murder, they seem to have moved in favor of shutting off communication with them altogether.
Peter King from Sports Illustrated shot out this tweet, admitting that America does indeed have (at least) two different cultures. If certain people are "not part of the America we need to strive for," then why are they delaying the issue? The solution is simple: secession. Let America divide itself into as many different factions with different laws as they want.
The Bitcoin core and Bitcoin cash communities parted ways. Do they compete now? Sure, but the point is that they don't have to agree to do anything. They just create what they want and don't have to consider or even listen to their opponents. They secede. So why isn't that the solution in politics?
