Luis Almagro, secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS), insisted today that the crisis in Venezuela requires immediate solutions to avoid further confrontation.
"The urgency of the people of Venezuela calls us to seek immediate solutions. A dictatorship only comes with elections," said the former Uruguayan foreign minister.
He warned that even if the OAS reached a joint resolution, the issue of Venezuela will not conclude today. In his view, the participation of new countries is needed to promote the restoration of democracy in the nation.
"This process will not end today, even though we have a very strong resolution. The issue of Venezuela will not end today. It will be necessary to approach our countries and the secretariat to promote democracy and human rights for the people of Venezuela, "he emphasized.
Almagro reiterated the issues to be solved in the country to solve the crisis: Opening of the humanitarian channel, electoral timetable, respect for the National Assembly, release of political prisoners and the call to the National Constituent Assembly.
"Until they are resolved, these issues will continue, so it is best to address them as soon as possible," he said.
The Uruguayan made the remarks during a press conference on the occasion of the OAS General Assembly that starts Monday in Cancún, Mexico. It is expected that this meeting will address the crisis in Venezuela.
