As I was lying down on the bed today, I found myself reminiscing about memories of growing up.
Growing up, I never understood sarcasm. It took more than frequent default-setting slaps to get me back on track and with an African mom, those come rather too frequently.
Some memories got me laughing so hard that I can't believe I did fall for some of them. One of the instances I remembered was a day I asked my mum a silly question.
I am always used to asking those and sometimes just a glare from her gives me the hint that I have just asked a silly question. An example is a day she was washing some cooking items like pots and kettle.
I mostly do the washing and she often complains about how semi-clean it is and asks me to wash them all over again which I will do of course with no joy.
That day she decided to wash all the pots and kettle clean ( both the inner and the outer parts). I must admit It was so sparkling clean that I could use it as a mirror.
After washing, a neighbor came by and they were having a discussion. She called on me and she asked me to take the pots and kettle inside, then I asked "where should I keep it?", She looked at me and said "why don't you put it on the bed".
Well I thought she wanted to do something with it so as you have guessed right, I carried them and arranged them on the bed in her room while I went on another errand.
I was on my way back when I saw a few neighbors at my house and I saw my mum fuming with anger when she set her eyes on me. I was trying to discern what might have happened when a neighbor asked in our pidgin language "why you sef go put kettle and pot on the top bed?" I looked bewildered, then I replied saying *" She told me to put it on the bed while shaking knowing exactly what awaits me. My response infuriated my mum the more and she charged towards me but was held by the people around.
Suffice it to say their intervention was my saving grace as my mum would have dealt with me. Then I was told her response was merely sarcasm and after my mum had calmed down she explained further what sarcasm is and how to know if she uses one.
Days after, it became a laughing thing and I also laughed at myself for thinking she wanted to use the pots and kettle on the bed.
I think that incident helped me understand the word "sarcasm" better and I have been careful ever since.
