Dry and desiccated
The heart conceals
The life contained
All around
Are our precious borders
Massaged and pummelled
To the edge
Of erosion
By the insistence
Of the ocean
We have gouged
Our scars of transportation
From coast to coast to coast
Like reminders of self harm
Their cross-hatching
Brings light and shade
To the monotony
Of our journeying
"Look, kids!
There's another one!
See how many we can count
Along the way..."
We plummet on
Reckoning up the tally
Occasionally
Nature is embedded
In an impact of
Time and place
Held within a moment
That seems to last forever
We totter on the precipice of
Synchronicity and fatality
And unwittingly
Yield our contribution
To the roadside
Memorials of decay
