I just finished a 10.0km running that lasted about 0hh:53mm:19ss !
Cross country running in the dark is a completely different kettle of fish, but here we are. Even with the best head torch it’s hard to see those little holes or even sometimes the big ones. You have to concentrate a lot more to land your feet correctly and not lose your balance. You know the ground is rocky and uneven but you can’t see it very clearly. This results in a much needed slower pace. Fortunately I know the route well so there was no risk of a missed turn but there was still a lot of stumbling and being hit in the face by branches. It was A LOT of fun.
In the dark you see and hear things that appear strange whereas in the light they wouldn’t bother you. A pheasant escaping a hedgerow, a person sat on a bench in the middle of nowhere smoking, an almost gone out fire, someone else out in the fields with a torch. I run with 1 other person at night (more once covid restrictions are eased) so luckily I don’t feel unsafe. Going to get a few more of these in before the summer nights start drawing in and there’s no darkness until after 9pm!
