Welcome back to this week’s Splinterlands Community Engagement Challenge! Things are starting to heat up in the market—Hive has climbed back to $0.244 after dipping from $0.26. That’s enough to reignite the urge to push leagues again. Let’s hope SPS and DEC follow suit!
Now, this week’s challenge theme is: Power Plays – Your Favorite Card Combos.
Honestly? I was instantly excited. There's one combo that’s been my go-to weapon since the early days. Even after Chaos Legion cards got rotated out from Modern mode, this combo stayed strong for me. Not just because it’s powerful, but because I’ve personally felt how consistently it brings victory—even with all cards at level 1!
💥 Budget-Friendly Magic Combo
My favorite element in Modern mode right now? Water.
Why? Because from the start, I’ve loved fast-paced gameplay with high damage. And magic attacks? Well, they ignore armor. So even if my opponent is fully shielded, I can sneak through with unblockable damage.
Here’s the combo I’ve used the most—and it wins a lot:
- Marlai Singariel – A summoner that gives +1 Magic Attack, the foundation of my magic strategy.
- Halfing Refugee or Commander Slade – as the frontline tank, depending on the mana cap.
- Daigendark Surveyor – with Magic Reflect, it punishes enemies who rely on magic too.
- Moxian Rebel – the genius with Weapon Training, giving magic attack to two adjacent allies who normally can’t attack.
- Yaba's Pickle – super tanky, and even deadlier with help from Moxian Rebel.
- Shock Trooper – the main DPS with a whopping 4 magic attack! But beware of the Electrified effect: every round, all your monsters lose -1 HP.
- Razorhound – the quiet lifesaver. His Strengthen ability gives +1 HP to your entire team—perfect to counter the Electrified damage.
The result? A full-blown magic team that’s ready to burn down enemies before we burn ourselves! 🔥
This strategy worked wonders in several of my battles in Modern mode. One of them even helped me secure a league promotion. The formation is basically just as I described above—and when the ruleset favors magic or neutralizes armor... boom. Shock Trooper makes an instant impact.
Usually, in round one, Shock Trooper fires off a 5-point magic hit (thanks to Marlai’s +1 bonus), which can instantly erase the enemy tank. Imagine taking down a frontline monster in just one hit. If the opponent doesn’t have a solid backup tank, their entire formation collapses.
But the biggest challenge? Time.
If the battle drags into round two or beyond, that Electrified damage starts eating away at my team. That’s where Razorhound shines. The extra +1 HP gives squishier units like Moxian and Daigendark just enough time to survive an extra round.
And aside from being effective, this combo is just plain fun. Every match feels like a race against time. Can I take out their tank before my own team crumbles from Electrified? When I pull off a win in round two or three—it’s so satisfying.
What makes this combo even better? All the cards are level 1. That means it’s perfect for new players. You don’t need overpowered, maxed-out cards to win—just solid synergy and good positioning.

🧠 Tips for Mastering This Strategy
Want to give this formation a shot? Here are a few quick tips:
- Pay attention to the ruleset. If magic is boosted (like Reverse Speed or Broken Arrows), this combo becomes devastating.
- Avoid enemies with Magic Shield or Void. They can neutralize your damage and shut the strategy down.
- Focus on early-round damage. Make sure your team delivers a heavy blow in round 1 or 2. First goal: drop that enemy tank.
- Always consider including Razorhound at the backline to help the team last longer.
One of the best parts about Splinterlands is learning from other players’ strategies. Sure, my secret’s out now 😄—but not all wins come from expensive cards. Even with level 1 combos like this, you can win consistently and climb leagues.
For new players, this combo shows that understanding card effects and smart placement matter more than just owning flashy cards. A solid team strategy beats solo stars every time.
