There’s one change coming to Splinterlands that I think will make players stop for a moment before pressing the battle button.
Usually, we just play, our rating goes up, and eventually we move up through the leagues. If our cards are strong enough and we win often enough, the journey continues. Simple.
Now, things are a little different.
Starting September 30, Modern Ranked will use a Bracket system. There are six choices: Wood, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Diamond, and Champion. So before we start climbing, we actually have to decide which mountain we want to climb.
And this is where I started thinking:
"What if choosing the wrong Bracket makes me regret it for an entire season?"
The answer: it can.
Each Bracket has minimum and maximum card level requirements. For example, the Gold Bracket allows Common cards up to level 8, Rare up to level 6, Epic up to level 5, and Legendary up to level 3.
But that doesn't mean low-level cards can be used freely. There are minimum levels too: Common 4, Rare 3, Epic 2, and Legendary 2.
So the higher the Bracket we choose, the more we need more than just high-level cards. Our collection also has to meet the minimum requirements.
I think this is a pretty significant change.
Before, we might look at the best cards we own and think, "I can play Gold."
Now the question becomes a little more serious:
Is the collection I actually use ready to play Gold?
Don't just look at one or two strong cards. The entire lineup needs to be considered.
And after choosing a Bracket, the journey isn't over. It's just beginning.
Each Bracket has nine Divisions, starting from Division 9 and going all the way to Division 1. Rating moves in 500-point increments: Division 9 is 0–499, Division 8 is 500–999, and so on, all the way to Division 1 at 4,000+ rating.
So if I choose Gold, my goal is no longer to climb out of Gold into Diamond like under the old system.
I have to climb:
Gold Division 9 → Division 8 → Division 7 → ... → Division 1.
I think this is interesting because every player now has their own competitive space based on the level of their collection.
Players with simpler collections don't necessarily have to immediately face cards that are far beyond what their collection can handle. Meanwhile, players with stronger collections can choose a Bracket that matches their collection.
But of course, there's a temptation.
Seeing a higher Bracket with more attractive rewards will naturally make you want to pick the highest one. The problem is, don't choose Champion just because the name sounds impressive while your cards are still trying to find their way home from Bronze.
Splinterlands even gives us one opportunity to change our Bracket choice. But there's an important condition: we can only reset it as long as we haven't advanced to the next Division. Once we've moved up, the Bracket is locked until the end of the season.
And our rating and reward points will be lost when we reset.
So this isn't a "let's try different things whenever we feel like it" button.
I see it more as an emergency brake.
For me, this is where the new strategy in Modern Ranked really begins. It's not just about building the best lineup, but about choosing a battlefield that matches our collection.
New players also need to understand this from the beginning. Don't just look at which Bracket offers the biggest rewards. Look at the card levels you actually have, the strength of your collection, and how comfortable you are competing there.
Because losing because of strategy is part of the game.
But losing because you chose a battlefield that doesn't match your own collection from the start—that's a different story.
And I think the first season is going to be pretty interesting. Every player has to establish their position from scratch. Some might choose the wrong Bracket, some might climb quickly, while others may only realize after a few battles that they aimed too high.
Personally, I'll treat this first season as a learning experience.
Not just learning how to beat opponents, but learning where my collection actually belongs in the battlefield.
My advice is simple: don't choose a Bracket because of prestige. Choose based on the cards you're actually ready to use.
Because in the new Modern Ranked, we're not just choosing where to play.
We're choosing our battlefield.
