The thing that impressed me the most about it was the pure artistry of the designers. The ability to have seen such a grand idea to carve a mountain into this amazing work of art.
The sculptor was Gutzon Borgluim he designed and oversaw the project from 1927 until 1941. This was quite the undertaking, and I find it amazing when seen up close. To think that this was accomplished in that time when the safety equipment and tools of the day where quit rudimentary especially compared to todays standards.
Behind the faces they carved what he had envisioned to be a hall of records. They carved out a giant cavern that was never finished. It had been the plan to someday contain such important documents as the constitution, and the bill of rights and many more important documents, this sadly never came to be due to many things including a funding issue that arose during the second wold war.
I hope you enjoyed the photos, and if you ever get the chance I highly recommend a visit.
