Why did our father say that, what could he possibly mean by it?
If your life is all plain sailing and easy what will you learn? Will you congratulate yourself on your career and investment choices, your good luck? Possibly.
You may even thank God for your good fortune.
The way to eternal life is through faith. You may think you have faith in God if life is sweet. You may think God has blessed you because you believe in him so much and praise him.
But faith needs to be tested and the only way of testing it is through suffering.
Let's say you've had a shit day at work and had to leave late, it's your anniversary and you should have been home 2 hours ago. Driving back you get a flat tyre in the dark pissing rain
Can I hear hallelujah, praise the Lord?
Let's say as a teenager your father commits suicide and a month later your mother dies in a car crash.
Will you say Yesss, thank you sweet Jesus?
To achieve eternal life you have to have absolute, unbreakable, unquestionable, total faith in God.
You have to understand that not only is everything in your life but your very life itself a gift from God.
You have to be humble and that usually comes from being humbled.
Think about it, or don't. :-)
