As I almost always do when visiting the countryside, I head out with my camera to capture everything I can—photographically speaking. After waiting a good while and walking through the woods, that beautiful bird appeared almost by chance; it watched me from above, perhaps sensing my intentions. Without hesitation, it descended to a height that made it possible to capture it—not to trap it, mind you, for this bird cannot survive in captivity, but to photograph it as it deserved. This bird embodies the spirit of all Cubans: colorful, proud, and, above all, free. That last quality is the deepest desire of every Cuban—to be free and not live in captivity, just like their national bird.
