The truth is, you might not have realized that you are not listening to yourself while you talk. Yea, this could sound funny but it is just the way it is. So many people who are into a discussion isn't really listening to what the other person is saying. They are just so anxious of the person to land or pause his or her statement for them to come in. And I am sure you can agree with me that this isn't a healthy way to build a relationship with someone. Aside that, there are countless times where we had talked trash even without realizing, simply because we refuse to listen to ourselves while we talk.

I can recall so vividly what usually happen whenever we are rehearsing a song and our M.D will always complain that the voices are not balanced. Sometimes it would be that he wasn't hearing their voices coming out from the backup microphone. Sometimes, it would be that their voices are just to loud at almost the same level with the lead singer. Also, in some cases, he would say one person's voice among them backing up is just too high than the rest and it is uncomfortable.

Well, even from the start, I had understood all he was trying to say. I am not really among them backing up because I handle the keys. But I would always contributes to the fact that he was right. And for some reasons, they saw us as people who are just looking for something to say. And they started reacting heavily to that. Along the line, when the hits keeps increasing, I had noticed they were not able to learn because they had seen no reason to. After all, it is normal to refuse learning when there is no solid reason to. And they had seen no reason to because they believe they could hear themselves perfectly well and don't understand why he - the M.D, had said otherwise.

This was when I came up with the plan. As they had done the song one final time, I had placed a recording with my phone and played along with them. This way, they had no idea what was going on behind the scenes and would feel no need to readjust. Of course, M.D knew about it as I have told him before now. And when we ended, I headed to the sound engine's direction and connected my phone to play the recording out from the speakers.

"Shit!...what is this?" They had said that because the recording was really bad (I mean the way they sang). It was like children playing with the mic. There was no balance at all. It was at this point they had come to understand clearly what had been said to them all this while. Because they had listened.

Bringing it down to life related issues, it is one thing to speak freely and another to speak and listen at the same time. Doing the latter puts you in the position of both you - the speaker, and them - the listener. You get to play both parties and you get to even understand very well what you are passing on to them and the questions to expect. It can also give you the opportunity to rethink on what you have said even while you are still talking. Benefiting to that, you realize it giving you the privilege to mend mistakes while they are still fresh.
