For those of you who are making an active investment into Splinterlands, whether time-wise or financially, you know just how quickly assets can appreciate on there and make it difficult to progress.
One set of assets that I felt boomed more quickly than others did were the land assets that the team created. Though we don't know yet exactly how they will be used, we do know that the plot (the cheapest of the land options) is selling for an ask of $853 dollars on hive-engine. Regions are not even selling and I heard news that a tract (the largest option) sold for around 700k a few weeks ago... WHAT? Source
Why Get Land?
For me, the reason to try to acquire land is because of the mystery around it; maybe it becomes an incredibly important aspect of gameplay and people end up making boatloads of passive income through their land holdings.
In a concrete sense, land also provides 10,000 airdrop points to holders. This would just about double what I am getting right now, and in a theoretical world where your airdrop points keep pace with the rest of the community, 10,000 airdrop points is raking in around 1.5 SPS per day. With roughly 250 days left in the airdrop, this would produce 375 SPS which could be staked at a 50% APR. Without the APR boost, this would already be worth $157 in SPS...
SO by buying a land plot right now you are making back at least 1/4 of the value you paid for it (the value of land should probably continue to go up as will the price of SPS once the airdrops come to a close and they are more scarce DYOR though).
Now... $850 is a large sum of money for most people to come up with immediately (myself included), but I am hoping to be able to stack enough Hive through blogging and converting DEC from Splinterlands to hopefully be able to supplement the cost while saving money from work to make this my number one purchasing objective. There is a decent chance that I will try to acquire a plot of land within a month, I just hope that the prices stay stable until that point comes.
