The general election will be held on May 9 in Malaysia. The country's Election Commission (EC) said this Tuesday. For the 61-year-old United Nations National Organization (UMNO) alliance, this election can be a tough test.

Election Commission Chairman Mohammad Hashim Abdullah told a press conference that the date of the election was fixed on May 9.

According to Reuters news, candidates nomination process will continue until April 28. Candidates can run election campaign for 11 days.

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak announced the extinction of Parliament on Friday after a debate over the issue. Opposition coalition has nominated former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad to the Prime Minister's post.

Najib is expected to come to power again.

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad is known as the architect of modern Malaysia. He took over as the Prime Minister of Malaysia in 1981. Under his leadership, the ruling UMO won the election five times and formed the government. He was the longest democratically elected Prime Minister of Asia. On October 30, 2003, after 22 years, he voluntarily left the Prime Minister's post. Later, he resigned from the party.
