First impressions are opinions formed regarding an individual when meeting him for the very first time. They may take place within a few seconds through appearances, mannerism, tone of voice, attitudes and manner of interaction with others. Although these opinions affect personal friendships, workplace relationships and even chances of getting ahead in life, they do not necessarily show true natures of individuals. People may appear rude due to nervousness, exhaustion and shyness. Judging people by first impressions tends to create misunderstanding as I found out as I got older.
Once in class, I met one of my classmates who kept quiet throughout the classes and sat at the back of the classroom all along. He never initiated any conversation thus I presumed him to be a very proud person who did not care about anyone. Weeks down the line, we were put in one group for presentation and this was when I discovered that I was totally wrong. He turned out to be very polite, intelligent and cooperative in explaining difficult issues in the class. He confessed to me later that he was shy by nature and took some time before opening up around strangers.
Even if the initial perceptions can sometimes prove wrong, they do matter since they are a basis for all other relations. The way the people feel at their first meeting is something that they are sure to remember for a very long time. The favorable impression can serve as a key to friendship, trust, and other opportunities both personal and professional, while the negative one will require more effort to change later on. That is why it is advisable to make an effort and present yourself properly but not pretend to be somebody else.
There are plenty of easy things that can be done to make the good first impression on the person whom one has just met. The sincere smile and greeting can make him or her feel at ease. Good eye contact, politeness in speech and attentive listening, and no interruption make the right impression too. Being dressed appropriately and arriving on time, showing some manners make an additional good impression. Perhaps the most important thing about making a good first impression is being honest, humble, and kind to everybody.
In conclusion, I am sure that the impressions should always be sincere and received with an open heart. Of course, one should always try to present oneself in the best light possible. However, people need the opportunity to prove themselves to you as well. Making an effort to look beyond first impressions has taught me a lot already.
