Today, I took the time to visit my uncle’s house in the countryside, in Buket Panjang II Village, Manyak Payed District, Aceh Tamiang Regency. The main purpose of my visit was to help my uncle harvest oil palm fruit. I can say that 75% of the people living in rural areas are likely to work as farmers or livestock breeders, and to prove it, I have also managed to capture several moments during my time in the village.
While I was in the oil palm plantation, I suddenly came across someone who was herding his livestock. Of course, this is something that can be learned from people who live in rural areas. The cattle may look like they are simply left to roam freely, but they are still under the supervision of the person herding them.
The weather was also extremely hot at that time, making this work feel even more difficult. We started harvesting the oil palm fruit at 7:00 in the morning, and everything was only finished at 5:00 in the afternoon.
The oil palm fruit that had been collected in one place would then be picked up directly by the palm oil buyer. Since there was quite a large amount of fruit, the buyer had to collect it using a dump truck.
However, before the oil palm fruit is loaded onto the truck, it has to be weighed first. I personally don't know exactly how much a kilogram of oil palm fruit costs in my area, but if I'm not mistaken, it is priced at around IDR 2,500 per kilogram.
Honestly, a job like this is very difficult to do. It takes a lot of practice and experience to be able to do everything properly and efficiently. Just imagine, a single bunch of oil palm fruit can weigh as much as 15–30 kilograms, and they only use a single metal pole specially designed to lift it.
I kept watching and learning from every new thing I encountered, because I believe that knowledge like this will definitely be very useful in the future. Once all the oil palm fruit had been weighed, the workers began loading the fruit onto the truck. After everything was finished, the buyer would then discuss the total weight and price with my uncle.
