After wrapping up my usual Saturday morning routine—cleaning, organising, and checking off my list of chores, I sat down and realized something I hadn’t noticed when I was busying up and down earlier on: I was bored. Not the "what movie should I watch" kind of boredom, but that quiet kind that comes with stillness. Before I knew it, it was turning into loneliness.
Rather than sink into it, I did what my mind told me to do. I grabbed my phone and started calling my friends. I didn’t even have a plan. I just wanted to hear a familiar voice, to ask if they were around, to see if they were feeling even a little bit like I was. To my surprise (and relief), they were. Everyone seemed to be in the same slightly empty weekend mood, so I suggested we just hanged out; maybe just stroll. They are agreed and this time wasn't going to be like other times we do spend. So we agreed on something: we weren’t going to spend a dime. No cafes, no restaurants, no malls. We were going to keep it simple. Just us, the outdoors, and whatever fun we could create.
We strolled a bit first, just chatting and catching up on the random bits of life we usually rush past. Then we found a nice place to settle down and just be. It was an open space not too far from home, small clearing surrounded by grasses and tree shades, with just enough breeze to make it feel refreshing. The spot wasn’t fancy, but it gave us the comfort we needed. Maybe it was the way the sunlight filtered through the leaves, or the way being outside somehow made us all feel lighter.
We talked about everything and nothing; work, childhood memories, TV shows, people we hadn’t seen in ages. One of us cracked a joke that had us all laughing way too loud, and suddenly it didn’t matter that we hadn’t spent money or that we didn’t have an “activity” planned.
We took photos, lots of them. Hours passed without us noticing. The sun began to deem, casting a soft golden hue across the spot we had claimed as ours for the day. No one was in a rush to leave, but we all knew the sweetness of the moment was in its spontaneity.
That day reminded me that joy doesn’t always have to come from doing something grand. Sometimes, the best kind of fun is the unplanned kind, shared under open skies with people who understand you, even in your silence.
