The Forest
English text
This is the story of a beautiful family of four; Cala the first born, the pride of her parents, industrious, cheerful, gentle and correct, Alicia who was the youngest of the duo, restless, mischievous and bad tempered, but full of affection and curiosity, and her parents who went for a picnic one summer weekend, at the edge of the green meadow there is a dense but beautiful forest in which sometimes Cala and Alicia would venture to play....
While Alicia would scan through the trees imagining epic adventures, Cala would sit on a dry log reading a book or thinking about the mundanities of life. That day something was different, there in the forest clearing while Alicia played among the trees, Cala stood up, dropped the book she was holding and walked in a northerly direction until she was lost among the trees "Don't move, I'm coming" she said to Alicia before venturing into the depths.
Alicia stayed there for an hour that seemed like an eternity, the girl was beginning to worry. It wasn't five minutes before she saw the silhouette of her sister approaching together in the same direction where she had left, but she noticed in her face that something was different, her countenance was serious, somber, as if she had seen a ghost. "We're leaving now, it's late" said Cala to her little sister, with an indifferent voice.
That night at home nothing happened as usual, Cala did not help her mother with dinner, nor Alicia with her homework, nor did she talk about high school things with her father. "Are you all right, daughter?" her father asked her during dinner that night "Yes, of course, everything is fine" she replied jovially and indifferently.
The days that followed passed in a sour way, the atmosphere in the house became heavy, as if a black fog was hovering within those walls, Cala and Alicia stopped playing together on weekends as it was already customary, family outings stopped being happy encounters to become uncomfortable and tense episodes.
The relationship between Cala and her parents degraded progressively, the father tried not to think too much about it, claiming that maybe it was just a matter of adolescence, the mother on the other hand became more severe, insistent and sometimes anger ruled her reason.
"What is wrong with you daughter?" her mother would ask every so often and the answer was always the same "I'm fine nothing is wrong with me why so much concern?" Alicia now played alone in the yard, while Cala spent the afternoons and evenings locked in her room; One night Alicia went to her sister's bedroom; she found her sitting in front of the window, looking at the night sky, that night she asked her with concern "Who are you What did you do with my sister?". Cala turned her gaze, a familiar look, familiar, but at the same time very distant and answered "I'm your sister, Alicia, it's still me, it's okay".
Cala stopped spending time with her family and friends, her mother began to treat her with contempt, perhaps out of frustration for not understanding what was going on inside her mind, her father became an innocuous presence and Alicia no longer recognized her sister as the same person, family dinners were the most uncomfortable time, the atmosphere was claustrophobic at the table, however, Cala remained unchanged, as if everything was really normal but at the same time there was something that was not where it should be, something strange and familiar, inside it was as if nothing was really happening.
One night in the middle of a fit of anger and without warning, Cala's mother pounced on her with a knife; "What did you do to my daughter?" she shouted "You are not my daughter!" she screamed, it was the last dinner that family was together.
Years went by and everything continued in relative normality, the normality that Alicia learned to accept after the visit to that forest; sometimes they went to visit her mother in the asylum, who since that night lost her sanity. Cala went to study in the city, as far away as she could from that house, every summer since that day Alicia goes into the forest convinced that her older sister is still among those trees...
