Book Insights 📙| Cures for an Empty Wallet!

In the book "The Richest Man in Babylon," in the fourth chapter, titled "Seven Cures for an "Empty Wallet," we come across one of the stories in this book that addresses the topic of areas a person can improve to fill their wallet. The situation that begins the chapter is that after years of prosperity, after the great construction of Babylon (irrigation canals and temples) came to an end, the workers could no longer support themselves because there were no direct jobs for them, causing the entire economy to begin to collapse.

The solution was to call on the most prosperous man in Babylon, Arkad, to teach a group of people how to solve the problem of empty wallets and thus revive the Babylonian economy. In the chapter, Arkad presents seven cures, but here we'll focus on the first ones. Come learn a little more about personal finance!

First Cure - Filling the Wallet

Before the first cure, Arkad presents a very interesting phrase: "No man can advance without first planting his foot firmly in his first step." I think it's important to start with this first insight, because without a solid foundation, before beginning any project, it ends up being unstable. Every construction begins with the foundation, with the first well-planned and thoughtful step, so that it continues on the right path in the future.

Professionals from various fields came to learn from Arkad, so he begins by explaining that there are several ways to generate cash flow, depending on each person's skill set. He then tells them to begin their process based on their profession. He then explains that they should use only 9/10 of their earnings, using the analogy of a basket of eggs. If everyone in a basket has 10 eggs, and you only take out 9, over time the basket will eventually exceed its limit because there will always be an egg from the previous day. In other words, if your wallet remains at 1/10, it will start to fill up.

Those who follow Arkad's advice to not spend more than 9/10 of their professional earnings will see their wallets fill up and the first cure take effect, even improving efficiency because now, instead of spending everything, you have a little left over every time.

Second Cure - Control Your Spending

This part begins a very interesting insight, because everyone says they're short on money, but Arkad says that everyone has different professions, meaning they earn different amounts for their work, and yet they spend more than they earn, even if they have more than others. The point here is something you may have heard before: the more you earn, the greater your "necessary" earnings seem to be, even if you prevent this from happening. The problem is that these expenses actually end up being unnecessary, and people are simply paying for more of their desires.

Here's a problem: anyone who doesn't analyze their habits and expenses runs the risk of incurring unnecessary expenses, which could end up eating into that 1/10th that should be saved. Therefore, the idea would be to evaluate all expenses and seek the best possible value for the money spent.

Primeira Cura - Enchendo a Carteira

Antes da primeira cura, Arkad apresenta uma franse muito interessante “nenhum homem pode avançar sem antes plantar o seu pé firme no seu primeiro passo”. Acho importante começar por esse primeiro insight, porque sem uma base sólida, antes de começar qualquer projeto, ele acaba ficando instável, porque toda construção começa pela base, pelo primeiro passo bem planejado e pensando, para que futuramente continue trilhando o caminho certo.

Indo para aprender com Arkad foram profissionais de diversas áreas, então ele começa dizendo que existem diversas formas de conseguir um fluxo de dinheiro de acordo com a habilidade de cada um. Assim, ele diz para que eles comecem o seu processo a partir de sua profissão. Depois disso ele explica que eles devem utilizar apenas 9/10 do que ganham fazendo uma analogia com uma cesta de ovos. Se todos uma cesta tem 10 ovos, e você retira apenas 9, com o tempo a cesta vai acabar passando o limite, porque vai ter sempre um ovo do dia anterior, ou seja, a carteira se mantiver 1/10 vai começar a se encher.

Para aquele que seguirem os conselhos de Arkad de não gastar mais do que 9/10 dos ganhos de sua profissão vão ver suas carteiras se enchendo e a primeira cura fazendo efeito, ajudando até na eficiência porque agora em vez de gastar tudo tem um pouco sobrando toda vez.

Segunda Cura - Controlar os Gastos

Essa parte começa um insight bem interessante, porque todos dizem que estão faltando dinheiro, mas Arkad fala que todos tem profissões diferentes, ou seja, ganham valores diferentes pelo seu trabalho, e mesmo assim gastam mais do que recebem, mesmo que tem mais que outros. O ponto aqui é algo que você já pode ter ouvido antes, quanto mais você ganha, maiores parecem ser os seus ganhos “necessários”, a mesmo que você impeça isso de acontecer. O problema é que na verdade esses gastos acabam não sendo necessários, mais sim as pessoas pagando por mais dos seus desejos.

Aqui um problema é observado, todos que não fizerem uma análise dos seus hábitos e custos, estão com o risco de ter um gasto ou outro que não é necessário, que pode acabar consumindo aquele 1/10 que deveria ser poupado. Assim, a ideia seria avalair todos os gastos feitos e buscar a melhor utilidade possível pelo dinheiro gasto.
