According to Katie Prescott’s piece in The Times, “Striking gold in the streets of King’s Cross,” the UK is becoming one of the global hotspots for AI companies.
Prescott points out how companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind are heading into London, and they are prepared to pay big salaries for top-tier AI developer talent.
King's Cross has become a hotspot for this, where universities and starts up huddle and support each other.
I guess this is no real surprise: Britain has some of the best centres in the world for maths, computer science, and engineering. Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial, UCL — for decades they’ve been the launchpad for tech talent all over the world.
And for once Britain finds itself in a field where it actually holds real global sway.
The obvious upsides....
AI companies bring in money, credibility, and high salaries. More startups sprout up, more venture cash flows, and global eyes focus on London. If these firms really take off, King’s Cross could end up being to AI what Silicon Valley is to software.
It’s not just about tech jobs. Britain desperately needs a kick in productivity, and AI could help here.
And at the development level AI doesn't require huge amounts of physical resources. It craves knowledge, networks, and computing power — stuff London actually has.
The downsides...
One founder complains about a “salary arms race.” Smaller startups can’t keep up if the big US firms are tossing millions at the best people. It’s like the little fish end up grooming talent just for the giants to scoop them up.
This is just the way capitalism: works of course: little companies innovate, big companies gobble them up (or their people), and pretty soon all the power gathers at the top.
Most major AI firms still have American roots. Britain supplies the brains, but the profits and control can end up somewhere else.
And then there's the other people in King's Cross... if it does become like Silicon Valley the ordinary people are just going to get priced out as rents soar.
Final thoughts...
It's probably just another case of the top 1% winning and the rest of losing!
