I recently finished a book called 1984, a book my father recommended I read. This book was published in 1949 by a man whose pen name was George Orwell. You may be thinking, well the book is called 1984! How was it written in the 40’s? Well, Orwell wrote the book thinking about how the world would end up if it became a completely dystopian totalitarian society in the future, and let me tell you, this book was so close to real life, it isn’t even funny.
1984 is a dystopian novel about what life is like in a world where the four Ministries (basically the government of Oceania) have complete control over the people who live there, including control over their thoughts. We follow a man named Winston, who works for the Ministry of Truth, and what his day to day life is like, in a world where the Ministries watch your every move, and how he lives everyday wondering if the Thought Police shall find out about how he broke societies biggest rules, all beginning with his own thoughts.
Though this book is fiction, it actually taught me a lot about what is going on in real life in terms of what the governments and big corporations do to keep the people in their system and what society can ultimately come to if it keeps going down its current path.
Though the book is based in 1984, which was the future for Orwell’s time, this book to me describes even farther into the future, like maybe 2044. If you want a serious glance about how the world is going to look politically and socially in years time, I highly recommend this book.
In ways you wouldn’t expect, this book will surprise you.
