If you haven't, go read part 1!: @restcity/cursed-part-1
While Giovanni hopefully stared at me, I had a war with the two feelings in my head. On one hand, I love Giovanni. Woah, not LOVE LOVE him, I just mean that he’s my best friend 4 life and he’s always been there to have a magical spar or talk with. Of course I’d like to go for ice cream with him, especially at the Sugar Oath cafe! On the other hand, Nory was an old friend I’d known longer than Giovanni, and she was really anxious about her powers being good enough to become a Witch. She’d arranged a whole sleepover and invited a bunch of girls from school so we could all judge if her magic was good enough to continue further with her witchood. Ice Cream, or a test of magic? Giovanni or Nory? UUH!
Oh, screw it! I could have Ice cream with Gio and then quickly pack my bags and head to Nory’s tonight. That schedule will work! I’ll make it work!
“I’m gonna get me a Mint Chocolate Chunk! Two scoops!” I smiled at Giovanni.
He smiled back. “I have no idea what I’m going to get.”
We both headed over to the Sugar Oath Cafe, a tiny three-story castle made of brown bricks, with two triangle towers on each side.
I saw a couple of teenagers laughing from one of the tower windows. I hoped the other tower didn’t have anyone sitting in it, because that would be the perfect place for me and Giovanni to sit on a beautiful night like this one.
Inside the Sugar Oath was like walking into a king’s castle. The minute you walked in you were standing on a velvety-red carpet with gold lining the edges, the whole thing leading up to the front counter. There was a button under the carpet that pressed down if you stepped on it, making a speaker play the sounds of a group of horns, announcing your arrival. The walls were made of stone, and there were stairs that spiraled up to the second floor and, up still to the castle towers above.
Me and Giovanni walked up to the fairy at the counter.
“Hello, your majesties, what is it that you both desire?” She asked.
I looked at Giovanni, who had his head craned up at the menu above her.
“Mint-chocolate- I began, but then I turned back to Giovanni.
“Do you… wanna get the same flavor?”
He shrugged. “Sure.”
“Well have two-Banana-Bridge Splits!” I blurted out proudly.
Giovanni’s eyes widened and his face whipped over to me. “The what? I thought you were getting Mint chocolate!”
“Yeah, but common! We ‘oughta try something new!” I wiggled my body and smiled dramatically at him.
Two sounds like an awful lot. Are you sure you’ll be able to finish this before the sleepover? My brain asked me. It was too late to think about that now, as the two banana bridge splits had just been slid up on the counter in glass pirate boats.
I carefully grabbed mine and headed for the stairs. “Common Gio! Let’s see if there’s a tower open for us to sit in!
We carefully stepped up about 50 steps up to the top chamber. I just kept thinking don’t drop this bowl girl. You know you don’t have the money to pay this place back for that glass. We finally made it to the third floor. It contained a Hallway with an entrance to a tower on either side.
“Yes! One’s free!” I turned and smiled at Giovanni. We quickly but carefully leapt over to the tower and set our bowls on the table, and sat in those comfy booths.
I immediately turned to the view. The castle tower contained a window that had a rounded top but flat bottom. It was a long window, but a black metal gate had been put at the bottom so you wouldn't fall out. It looked over the road and the Syrup Tree forest me and Giovanni had just come out of.
I was about to begin eating, but I heard talking from raspy and rocky voices. A group of women were coming up the stairs. They had on black robes and pointy hats of the same color. The one up front even carried a black cat that leapt out of her arms and walked my way.
“Oh, no,” Giovanni muttered.
I nearly lost my appetite. These women were professional witches.
