Everyday for six months, a businessman walked past a poor fellow who was selling shoelaces, and dropped a $1 in the seller’s box. But being charitable, the businessman never took any shoelaces out of the box.
One day when he had dropped his usual coin, the businessman felt the poor fellow’s hand on his arm.
He noticed the fellow was about to say something. “Yes,” said the businessman without waiting for the question, “I suppose you’re wondering why I never take shoelaces after I put my coin in the box.” “No,” said the poor fellow. “From today you have to put $1.50, since the cost of shoelaces has gone up!”
