Man, I’m travelling back to the sixties and going to start a revolution! I’m letting my hair grow long and shaggy like a hippie and thinking communal living is the way to be happy.
Seriously though, the music of bands like The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, David Bowie was exciting and influencing the mindset of the younger generation. Underneath it all a rebellion against the rigid ways of our parents and the establishment was taking place.
The sixties started the emergence of music from psychedelic, blues, hard rock, etc along with the introduction of mind altering drugs.
Condoms are not always reliable in the hands of the male and with the introduction of the birth control pill, young women could be as sexually demanding as men without worrying about getting pregnant. The church leaders were alarmed - women were relied on to keep the faith and home fires burning. They watched in horror as mothers were rapidly filling the doctors’ offices with their teenage daughters to get them on the pill.
Conception was now in the hands of women. The term ‘nuclear family’ was becoming popular with one or two children as the norm.
Besides the explosion of free love, the 1960s was a decade of political views and civil rights movements. The young handsome John F. Kennedy was president of the U.S.A.
I remember the day President Kennedy was shot, November 22, 1963. I had turned nineteen the first of the month. All afternoon I watched in horror, on the old black and white TV, the details of his death. Everyone I knew mourned the loss of this charismatic leader of the free world.
The assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963 and of Martin Luther King Jr. later that decade stand out in my mind as the negative side of the sixties revolution. The great music that came out of the decade is the positive.
