Jules Verne was right, they discover a huge ocean underground.
They have discovered something, surprise you, a gigantic ocean as vast as all the seas on the surface, hidden almost 700 km deep here on earth, it seems like Jules Verne's travel script to the center of the earth, but it is real science that is stating it again.
Researchers separated by more than a decade brought to light one of the most provocative findings on our planet, water in the form of a mineral trapped under unimaginable pressure in the Earth's mantle, in 2009 geologist Graham Pearson and his team from the University of Alberta literally dug deep and found a rare diamond in Brazil, inside it was ringwoodite, a mineral that had never before been seen with water trapped here on earth, only in meteorites.
That rock came from a depth between 410 and 660 km, the so-called transition zone where the pressures are so extreme that the water does not flow and is trapped in the crystals stored in the form of ions. For years many thought that this could be just an isolated case, but in 2022 a new sample appeared this time in Botswana, the mineral was studied and the verdict was an entire ocean trapped down there, extending for thousands of kilometers.
It is their sea, but not as we imagine it, it is not a liquid ocean, that water is chemically incorporated into minerals in a form that only exists under colossal pressures, but the amount is absurdly equivalent to all the oceans that we see on the surface, according to the most recent calculations.
Scientists still have a lot of digging to do, literally, and where did that water come from? is still changing today, there is exchange with the oceans that we see, that deep water cycle that can explain plate movements, irruptions and even the formation of the atmosphere, the answer could change our notion of habitability, climate stability and even give us clues as to how the earth has stayed alive for billions of years.
