My experience in the university is going to be considered one of my greatest experiences in life, but of course you know I don’t mean the academic aspect. I’m sure I have forgotten what the academic aspect was like in school, because I zoned out academically in my second year. But I was studying because I was tired and I wanted to finish with a very good result. Despite being tired of school, I still wanted to graduate with a good result, didn’t want to disappoint my lecturers, parents and myself.
Going to the university for the first time felt like a scary thing because, when I was in high school I heard a lot of exciting stories about the University life, am a social conserved person, so exciting things make me anxious. The thought of being independent (not financially because my dad always came through for me) in the university was really something I was looking forward to exploring. Staying with my parents at home came with a lot of restrictions, so it felt nice that I was going to have my social freedom when I got to the university.
I got into a private university in Delta State Nigeria and the name is Western Delta University. I am from Delta State, so I chose the university because I felt it was closer to my extended family house in Delta State, so it will be easy to go there when I feel lonely. But guess what? I only visited my extended family only in my first year, the rest times were spent going to stay with my Dad in Abuja and Mom in Lagos.
Studying Industrial Chemistry was very easy for me because I loved chemistry and my lecturers were good to us, even if we were 5 in department. We were once 5 but one of us couldn’t take the pressure so she left and went to a different department. That made us 4 which was nice but a lot more tasking because it was easier for the lecturers to identify us and make sure we were always present in class. Imagine being 4 in class and the lecturer asks a question, you always have to answer because I hate being seen as a dumb person. This made me pay attention in class every time so I don’t have to look dumb when they ask questions. Part of me always wished that we were more populated so I can be free from always being serious in class.
I’m grateful for the friends I was opportune to have when I got to the university. My first set of friends were my roommates but @onwugbenuvictor turned out to be not just a friend but one of the best friends and a brother I had in college. We were in different departments, he studied computer science and I studied industry chemistry, but people always mistook me for a computer science student. Being a social anxious person, I made most of my other friends by associating with
@onwugbenuguctor. I became friends with
@attentionneeded because he was in the same department as
@onwugbenuvictor.
Yeah that’s me in the middle with @onwugbenuvictor at the right side and
@attentionneeded at the left side. This was our first year, we used to do general course together and did Maths with the computer science student.
Once again, I became friends with @estherscott because I was always hanging around
@onwugbenuvictor. I felt she was too much of the smarty rude type that’s the reason I always avoided her in our first year, turns out she is actually a nice person. Not just nice but one of the smartest people I know 😏
Well like I said @onwugbenuvictor was my brother in school, so it’s hard to find a picture of me without him in it. I never felt comfortable taking a pictures alone, we just had to take it together. Pretty much made school bearable, glad we all graduated together, because school would have been hell without him in it.
My 4th year which was my final year was the most intense year of my full life in college. This is the year I got scared and depressed because I was scared of what life would be after school. I kept on worrying about how I was going to make a living after school. My first 3 years was me trying to distract myself from the fact that I will be graduating in my 4th year, so when the 4th year arrived, I couldn’t distract myself anymore. My friends and I tried a lot of things to do to make money so that when we graduate we won’t feel the pressure of being un employed. This was the year someone introduced Steemit to me but I was not serious with it and I abandoned it. Well I wouldn’t say I wish I didn’t abandon it then because I believe everything happens for a reason.
