The Exorcist came out in 1973 and is based on a novel by William Peter Blatty who also wrote the script for the movie.
I know I am late to this horror party. I always thought that after watching so many horror movies and as this movie being so old I will not enjoy it. I was very very wrong. This movie is more than an exorcism movie. We all know the iconic scenes from the movie with the exorcism and the processed girl. But what I loved most about the movie is the mythology that it builds. This is not your ordinary girl gets processed movie. From the opening scene of the movie, I knew that this was not what I was expecting it to be. I don’t even want to give this part away, but it’s not a typical start for a horror movie.
The characters in the movie are great. Everyone gets a background story, they all have depth and when they all come together, it does not feel contrived. The only unnecessary part of the movie is seeing the girl’s mother at work, it didn’t add anything to the movie or her character. The acting in this movie was really impressive, I think everyone can acknowledge that the acting by Linda Blair as Regan MacNeil is one of the most impressive child actors seen on screen. Everyone else also did a terrific job.
The background music is amazing. And I am not the kind of person who usually notices this sort of thing, but the music here caught my ears and attention.
The mythology in this movie is what really captivated me. Faith and demons are portrayed very interestingly in this movie. In the end this movie makes you think about the type of faith that it portrays. It really didn’t leave me, and you can find many different interpretations of the meaning of the movie online which shows just how interesting the movie is.
Is it a scary movie? No. No cheap jump scares here, but also not real horror. If you’ve seen a lot of horror movie, you’ll probably view it as more entertaining than scary with really good atmosphere. I still highly recommend the movie.
