Hello Community, family and friends, it is a pleasure to greet you and share with you my experience of being in charge of my younger brother for a whole month. It turns out that my parents have a month of travel to another state in Venezuela and for reasons beyond their control have not been able to return home. At first I thought that I would only stay in my brother's care for a week, so I felt very confident to fulfill my responsibility as the older sister. My parents did not want to leave us at home alone, and since they did not have money available to cover the cost of everyone's ticket, they had no choice but to entrust me with the care of my brother and our little dog Jeico.
It is the first time that we are alone at home for so long and it is for me the first time that I feel all the responsibility of taking care of my younger brother, because I am in charge of everything at home. It may be that many siblings are used to that kind of experience, but for me it has been a total chaos, I do not say it for my brother because he and I get along very well. Personally I feel that I have to be aware of everything, avoid disorder, plan my whole day because it's not just about my brother, our little dog Jeico, the house doesn't clean itself.
Another reason why I could not go on the trip with my parents is that my little brother is in school almost finishing his last weeks of class and he should not miss his homework. For me the first week it was hard to get up early to make breakfast for my brother, my mom always takes care of everything and I don't really know how she does it, but she has everything on time. The first few weeks my brother was late for class because I overslept, now that I think about it I am getting used to getting up before six in the morning because I don't have enough time. The first week my brother came home and did his homework calmly until one day he came home with a math homework and five late papers, I don't know what happened to me, I got careless and it was chaos for me too. My brother was upset because I was going to get one of them wrong, I just couldn't figure out how to do everything faster. My brother is in fifth grade and his teacher is very demanding, from one day to the next she assigns a lot of homework and that's when I begin to understand why my mom felt so stressed.
I have been in charge of my brother for a whole month now, this time together has been full of fights, laughter, tears and fear, we both get along well; however, I recognize that it has been a long time since I shared fun moments with my brother, this time was necessary even though it turned out to be in the middle of so many family problems. He and I are 7 years apart, I always imagined how my life would be when he grew up and now that I have to take him everywhere, take care of him and be aware of his meals is a challenge for me. In the evenings we always talk, laugh, watch a movie, now I feel closer to him, we are closer and that is very positive for both of us, I know that this side makes my parents happy because they are always advising us to support each other as siblings to stop fighting for nonsense. My parents did not have in mind to leave us so much time alone at home, both for them and us this situation is difficult, soon they will be back home. During this time I have taken my brother to visit my grandparents, to the swimming pool and everything has gone very well for both of us. This momentary responsibility in my life has helped me to see my parents as heroes, they do not stop making video calls every day, up to three times a day my mom calls to guide me, scold my brother and remind us that we must be united at this time, have patience with each other, something that is not easy, but I think we both have overcome the crisis of the first weeks.
The first week was not easy at all, I felt a lot of stress and I got sick to my stomach; however, my little brother took good care of me, he was aware of how I was feeling and he was playing near my bed because I had a fever. At that moment I thought that sometimes we are so unfair with our parents, that we do not value their effort even in sickness. I was in bed for two days and my brother took care of cleaning the whole house and even cooked his own food, always under my supervision, of course, and now we both laugh a lot because during this time he made several mistakes when he called me mom.
My parents are going through a bad time, now we have to wait for them at home and that situation is a concern not only for my little brother and me, our grandparents and aunts are looking after us, every day someone from the family comes to see how we are, take us food and give us advice. The truth is that not everything has been rosy, although I feel grateful for the kindness and concern of the family for us.
My emotions have been running high, my friends do not understand my parents' situation and think that I should leave my brother with my grandparents, because it is the best thing to do, but I do not want to just because I know that I can continue waiting for my parents. Sometimes people do not understand and think that being a young girl I can not take care of my brother, so far I have managed and I feel confident to move forward, because my parents trust me and I trust them and I know that soon they will be back as they have already told me. Of course, at times I am afraid that my parents will be away from home much longer and I am not the only one who feels that fear, my little brother has also told me that he feels fear when he thinks that my parents will not be back soon, it is normal to feel that fear. One of my first emotions was to feel fear of failing in the care of my brother when my parents told me that they could not return home, I cried and felt upset, then I passed and now I am very calm at home with my brother, because in the distance my parents have been present every day.
I don't refuse that idea, because I know that if my parents need me to help them, I must put their teachings into practice, supporting my parents is just a part of my gratitude and I don't see taking care of my brother as a burden, we are brothers, he is my family and in good or bad times we must support each other. It is easy for me to explain things to him, he is almost 11 years old now and is a very intelligent child.
My parents have done a good job in our education, this short time with him has led me to mature and be more responsible, we both learned the lesson to help my mom at home, be more orderly and understand my parents.
When my parents return I have a lot to tell them and above all to hug them because I miss them a lot, I love them.
I hope you like this brief reflection fellow family and friends, this is a summary of my experience taking care of my younger brother for a month.
