The relationship with relatives always has been toxic from generation to generation. I think this is the one thing which never got developed or we never tried to fix it. Because we thought it's an elderly person then we should ignore it and abide by it. This is the wrong thing we all have done in life. The silence made fake respect for elders but children actually never felt respect for them. Instead their hate began to grow as hey grew up.
My relationship with my father's side was good but with my mother's side it wasn't really good. My dad was a great man, sadly he passed away before he could teach us more things about being a gentle man. Anyway, my uncle's from dad's side they always tried to help our family after our father passed away. Even though they were poor they still tried to give us shelter. For that reason I have so much respect for them in my heart till now. After getting married I have been not in touch with my uncle's but whenever we talk or meet we can still feel the same love and connection.
What I want for my children? I would say who am I to decide that? If my children feels uncomfortable with any of our relatives then I don't want them to talk, meet or communicate at any terms. I want the well-beings of my children, I don't care who I have good relation with that doesn't mean my children has to do the same or they have to be like me. If they feel like doing it the they will do it, if they don't want to then they don't need to. I only want my children to have good relation with the people they love to talk not the people who make them feel bad.
I don't want to chain my children and make them feel suffocated. I will not mind even if they don't have relationship with any of our relatives. I think this is what a good parenting should be like. In this way, my children will always feel free like sharing about everything to me. I want to be there safe place and not someone who forces them to talk with relatives against their will. If an uncle or aunty can't make my child feel love or care, and they pretend infront of me or my wife that won't work at all. Children usually love uncle's aunt's when they adore the child. But a child can realize when someone doesn't love them.
In the end, do not ever force your child to maintain relationships with the relatives. Let them be free, let them decide it for their own. We are their parents we can only guide them not force them. If the relative finds it upsetting that should also not matter, like I said before prioritize your child's choices, only then they can trust you to the core. I had good relationship with my uncle's doesn't mean my children has to maintain the same thing in their lives.
