Hello everyone, I have been thinking about a topic lately and that is mental health. Question arises in my mind if people should get days off for mental health issues? Well, I don't see them as an extra holiday. To be honest, I see them as preventive care. For an example when our cars breaks down we send it to repairs, we always back up our computers before they crash and maintain machines to keep them running well. So, the same goes for a human being. They also need some break to function properly. Yet many people only pay attention to their minds after they have already reached their limit and that never made much sense to me.
As a family man, I have learned that responsibilities never stop. I have been through days, when work was stressful, family needed attention and unexpected incidents appeared all at once. I know it's not in my hand but sometimes pressure builds up over time. During times like this I feel that if I could get a single day to reset then I could do more good, than pushing through another week while exhausted.
I'm a businessman, I had my own office before and had employees. As a boss I used to believe that my employees are not only my employees, they are also human beings. So, I never treated them any less human. I have accepted their request for leaves many times, at first I used to confirm their problem then I would take the next step. Without any proof I never provided leave for anyone. So, I believe companies should consider giving employees a small number of mental health days each year. However, I don't think they should simply hand them out without checking the actual reason for a off day. If employees are afraid of being judged for using those days, the benefit exists only on paper. So, this kind of policies are useless if people are too scared to use it.
I know many people has same questions that "what if workers will abuse mental health days?" That is obvious, it can happen but there will always be some people who misuse the opportunities. We don't need to remove the facilities because of that. We need to check if someone is being honest, but not treating everyone as dishonest. Trust should be the starting point, not suspicion.
I also think many mental health problems are also created by the workplace. If someone stays busy with work all of the time, then it slowly drains their energy without them realizing it. Giving someone mental health day will help them get rid of unhealthy work habits. After taking a day off they might work even better, because their brain will start to function properly when it's necessary. I also think people don't consider about having a good mental health, they just neglect it repeatedly. Someone can go insane if their mental health is ruined, that is why it's very important to keep our mind healthy.
In my opinion, the purpose is not to help people escape work for a day. The purpose is to create workplaces where people don't carry unwanted feelings to work and they won't feel the need to escape in the first place. Every employee is a human being before they are a worker. When a person's mental health is good their mind helps to take better decisions and enjoy life outside the office. If a few well-managed mental health days can help achieve that, I believe they are worth considering.
