🦉 The common redstart (Phoenicurus phoenicurus)

📚 Phoenicurus Greek: dark red phoinix, oura tail

These bright, beautiful birds arrive in Siberia at the end of April. At this time, males can be seen and heard. Females arrive a little later, although this is almost imperceptible, since they behave rather modestly and silently.

They nest in natural hollows of trees, or they occupy old hollows of woodpeckers. However, they can also settle near human buildings. Every summer, walking around the city, I hear one male in the courtyards. There is a school next to my house, and there one male constantly fusses about in the low bushes.
Flies to Africa for the winter quite early. Already in late or mid-August, they can no longer be found in the forests.
