The nightmares matter, if you've got any. They matter to each person under their emotional weight. Not everyone gets them all the time, and if you do, there is some serious introspection to be done, a lesson to learn about yourself.
I used to have nightmares like normal people, but I got angry and starting hunting the monsters. The first time was when I was about four years old and took a vampire's bite when he cornered me, which infuriated me enough to use his powers against him. Another nightmare involved the Chucky doll chasing me around my home at that time, waving his iconic kitchen knife. He cornered me in the bathroom, and I was overcome with indignation. I fought back, took his knife, and started chasing him instead.
Another character that frightened me as a child, Freddy Krueger, must have known I wouldn't be much fun because he never came to haunt my dreams.
A common theme is that in dreams at least, my fight response is only triggered as a last resort when I'm trapped.
There have been various other dreams in which I would be the aggressor because of some injustice, but rarely if ever will I solve problems with force in my waking life. Still, dreams remain fascinating to me when I'm fortunate enough to remember any.
Now I just have interesting battle dreams at best (barring the rare dreams of actual bliss or revelation) or serene blackness at worst. I can't even watch scary movies without itching to wage war. When I see demons on film, monstrosities, predators, assholes, whatever the case may be, I see not a threat to be feared, but an enemy to be understood and coldly neutralized. The majority of fictions, I only faintly empathize with, if well-told. Demonic films especially irritate me because I know that, despite romanticization and primitive science, such beings exist in some form with severely ill intent.
My point in all this is that nightmares can be defeated from the inside out. I can promise that you are the biggest threat in that realm, once you choose to acknowledge as much and master yourself.
Salvation and defiance against evil go hand in hand, I've learned. Go scare something scary.
