Children are copies of their parents, and there are significant physical factors that connect children to their parents. Things that other people can point at and say truly you are your father's son or your mother's daughter. Parents are the bedrock of their children, and the kinds of parents will tell the children.

Just like me, I am a mini version of my dad; we look so much alike that you can tell by looking at me who I resemble. I got his look; the only difference is that I'm a female and he is a male. That's how much we look alike, but aside from the looks, there are other traits that I took from my dad that I'm pleased with about 100 percent.

One trait I got from my father

There are lots of traits I got from my father, but in response to the prompt, which says just one trait or characteristic, that would make me choose my skin color. Yes, this is one thing I cherished so much. My dad is dark in complexion, and I love the way his skin glows, and this is one thing I took from him.

I'm dark in complexion, and I can say that being of this skin color has many advantages. I can say this because I do compare and contrast myself with my best friend, who is fair in complexion. You can call her a foreigner because of her skin color. It would take just a few percent for her to be an albino.

This is a complexion that some people are dying to get, but I wonder why because she does a whole lot of maintenance on her skin. If an insect bites her, her skin will get irritated and become reddish. If she refuses to use her body cream for a few days, she will get rashes. She has to use different body creams to retain her skin color, despite that being her natural skin color.

I, as a dark-skinned girl, don't have problems using different organic body creams to keep my skin color. Irrespective of what bites me, it will adapt to my skin. I guess this is why it's concluded that black is beautiful.

One characteristic I got from my mother

What can children do without their mothers? I mean, good mothers are a rare gem that is difficult to come by. One characteristic that I learned from my mother is patience. She should have been named Patience; no matter what she is going through, she is always patient. I learned from her that patience is a virtue, which I have emulated.

Before I could get worked up over something or react otherwise, that meant my patience limit had been reached. This is the reason why I snubbed most things that wanted to get on my nerves; I'd rather work away than get into trouble. Some people think being patient is stupid, but it's not. To me, patience is being classy, and setting boundaries likewise means having high self-esteem.

How have these helped me in life?

These traits and characteristics from my father and mother have been of great help to me in my journey in life. As for the skin color, it has saved me from unnecessary spending on maintenance cream to keep my skin glowing. All I need is a regular body cream, which I've used over the years, and in case it isn't available, I can easily use Vaseline or baby oil to make cream when necessary.

My light-skinned friend dared not change her body cream; she was going to get rashes. I wonder why her skin color is so expensive to maintain. This skin color has a lot of advantages for me.

The characteristics I gained from my mother have helped me in my decision-making. Patience has taught me to monitor the individual behaviors around me. While watching and keeping my cool, I've always gotten to know some people's thoughts even before they speak out and would have found answers to their questions even before they asked.

This has made life easier for me, and yes, I would love to pass it on to my children because it is something I am proud of. Both the skin color and the patience characteristic are things I can boldly say anywhere, which I'm sure my kids will be proud of.

Thanks for your time, and your comments will be appreciated.
