A pond is definitely a must have for any homestead. Without our pond we would be hauling hundreds of gallons of water every week to our animals. Our pond is 22 feet deep in the center and it is covering just over half of an acre.
This pond has several overflow systems so that way our dam is not washed out. First there is a spillway that leads into a much smaller pond.
And once that pond is full it runs down the spillway and into a little creek. A couple years ago we had bad erosion problems on this overflow so we picked up around a hundred wheelbarrow loads worth of rocks on our property to fill in the erosion problem.
From this little pond there is also another spillway for when we get lots of rain in short periods of time. Since we have been in a dry spell for awhile and this spillway has not been use in over a year it is kind of hard to tell that its there.
This is also a great fishing pond. In three days we pulled out over a hundred bluegill and perch and there are still plenty more to catch. The best spot t catch fish is in an area with some logs in it.
We are not able to swim in the pond since we have cows that defiled the water but like I said the pond is a must have for a homestead.
