English version
Today I will approach the story Two Friends, published in 1883 by the French writer Guy de Maupassant, here is used as a situational context the Franco-Prussian War, the narrator is placed there to present a story that questions the war conflicts that broke out in Europe in the late nineteenth century. As Maupassant is a Frenchman, he places himself on the Gallic side to present his reflections, pointing to the German side as the aggressor. It is understood that it could not be otherwise because he ran the risk of censorship and banishment.
In the middle of the siege of Paris, the two main characters, Monsier Morissot and Monsier Sauvage, recognize each other in the street and decide to go fishing. Both are involved in a complicated situation, where silence reigns and is abandoned as a patriotic act because publicly questioning the monarchy of Napoleon III, nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte, was considered treason.
It could be said then that the main theme is the loyalty between the two friends. There are no dramas or pleas before the invaders, death is accepted with resignation, as well as the collapse of the dying French empire. The dialogues between both characters project political and ideological opinions of great value on what is happening, which remain in the background when the cruelty of the Prussians is described.
Before the siege of Paris, both characters used to fish frequently, the narrator does a great job describing the pleasurable sensations generated by this activity. These two men forge a great bond of friendship that was born of chance and maintained over time, despite not sharing political opinions, although they do agree that they will never be free no matter which tendency governs. From 1792 to 1944, France was a battlefield for various reasons ranging from ideological and military to religious and strategic, for this reason, the narrator is pessimistic about the end of this war.
Guy de Mauppasant is considered a master of letters and here he proves it once again by presenting us with a brief narration of the Franco-Prussian war, which caused famine, misery and devastation in France, as well as serious emotional sequels and a great deal of pain due to human losses. Another aspect to highlight is the description of the German soldiers, presented as heartless and violent beings, a stereotype that would later transcend due to the participation of the Germans in both the First and Second World War, both germinating precisely from the resentment that is reflected in the context of Two Friends.
