Exploring Ayacucho Square (Eng/Esp)

Ayacucho Square is one of the largest in the city of Cumana—especially if the park is considered part of it. The design is the work of the renowned French architect and urban planner Rouland Coultrox, who was known for introducing the modern and classical style that characterized Paris in the early 20th century.

Perhaps the most iconic feature of the square is the equestrian statue of Grand Marshal of Ayacucho Antonio Jose de Sucre, created by the Italian artist Giovanni Turini. The statue remains intact and is one of the largest in the city; furthermore, it stands on a pedestal of considerable size, which accentuates its sense of grandeur and importance.

As I mentioned, the plaza and the park form a single space, which is why you can walk freely and also enjoy the banks of the Manzanares River. You could say that the Ayacucho Museum marks the boundary between the two spaces; it is a place where works of art and items of historical value are on display.

Another eye-catching feature is its large fountain, which is a delight to behold when it’s in operation—especially at night, when the movement of the water, combined with colorful lights, creates a truly captivating visual spectacle. Enormous trees have stood there since time immemorial; I stood next to a very leafy one whose size made me feel very small.

A podium was erected nearby, built on one side between the statue of Marshal Sucre, the fountain, and the flagpoles, to serve as a platform for public events. Speeches, recitals, cultural events, and various other activities are often held here, so it functions as an open-air stage.

I continue to construct mental images that allow me to recreate my city’s past, thereby gaining an understanding of the history behind each street, plaza, or park. In this way, I help to celebrate the legacy that honors heroes, poets, teachers, and other distinguished figures who are part of our identity.

La plaza Ayacucho es una de las más grandes de la ciudad de Cumaná, lo es si se considera al parque como parte de ella. El diseño pertenece al destacado arquitecto y urbanista francés Rouland Coultrox, quien se caracterizó por introducir el estilo moderno y clásico que distinguió a París a principios del siglo XX.

Quizás lo más emblemático de la plaza es la estatua ecuestre del Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho Antonio José de Sucre, elaborada por el artista italiano Giovanni Turini. La obra se conserva intacta y es una de las más grandes de la ciudad, además de ello reposa en un pedestal de tamaño considerable, lo que acentúa la sensación de grandeza e importancia.

Tal como señalé, la plaza y el parque conforman una sola estructura, por tal razón se puede caminar libremente y además disfrutar de las riberas del río Manzanares. Se puede decir que la frontera entre ambos espacios la constituye el Museo Ayacucho, lugar donde se exponen obras artísticas y elementos de valor histórico.

Otro elemento que llama la atencion es su gran fuente que suele alegrar la vista cuando está en funcionamiento, sobre todo en horas nocturnas, cuando el movimiento del agua, junto a coloridas luces, ofrecen un espectáculo visual muy atractivo. Enormes árboles han permanecido allí desde tiempos muy remotos, me paré al lado de uno muy frondoso cuyas dimensiones me hicieron sentir muy pequeña.

Cerca se levantó un podio, se construyó a un lado, entre la estatua del Mariscal Sucre, la fuente y las astas con las banderas, con el fin de ser una tribuna para actos públicos. Discursos, recitales, eventos culturales y varias actividades que suelen escenificarse desde aquí, así que funciona como un escenario al aire libre.

Sigo construyendo imaginarios que me permitan recrear el pasado de mi ciudad, para de esta forma comprender parte de la historia de cada calle, plaza o parque. Así contribuyo a enaltecer el legado que honra a héroes, poetas, maestros y otros personajes insignes que forman parte de nuestra identidad.
