A walk around the exterior of the Palacio de los Capitanes Generales, the most important building in the history of Cuba🇨🇺 (ENG/ESP)
English Version
Greetings friends and members of the community. A few days ago while walking through the historic center of Havana, passing by the Plaza de Armas to look for the famous and busy Obispo Street, I passed by the majestic Palacio de los Capitanes Generales.
The Palacio de los Capitanes Generales is an architectural work dating from the 18th century. It began to be built in 1776, during the colonial period of Spanish rule in Cuba, and was designed and built in the Baroque style of the time, constituting the greatest exponent of that style in all the architecture of the island. It is located in the well-known Plaza de Armas, near other well-known buildings such as the Palacio del Segundo Cabo and the Castillo de la Real Fuerza.
This building came to occupy the place previously left by an old Catholic church that was destroyed by corsair attacks, and was part of the construction plans of the time for the architectural enrichment of the area of the Plaza de Armas. Its main purpose was to be the seat of residence of the governors, notaries and town councils in the old Villa de La Habana. It is said that it became the seat of up to 65 captains general representing the Spanish crown, in the period from 1791 to 1898. In the 20th century
it played the role of headquarters of the U.S. government in its intervention in the largest of the Antilles, witnessing important historical events in that period.
The Palacio de los Capitanes Generales occupies an entire block in the shape of a quadrilateral on the site of its location. It has an approximate height of 22 meters and its design is based on the dominant style in Europe at the time of its construction: the Baroque. As distinctive elements of this style stand out in this work its facade with beautiful columns in arcades, made in conchíferas limestone that give them the rough aspect.
At the entrance there is an imposing wooden door, which allows access to the large inner courtyard where there is a marble statue of the Great Admiral Cristóbal Colón.
In addition to this, this site has 40 rooms that are currently used as exhibition centers for artistic collections and elements of historical and cultural significance and value. It is worth mentioning examples of some of them, such as the Hall of Mirrors, the Hall of Cuban Cobres, the 19th Century Hall, among many others. On this occasion I did not go inside to take pictures of these spaces, but on another occasion I will try to do so to show you some of them in more detail.
Well friends, I hope you have found interesting what I have shared about this very important work of Cuban history that has managed to endure over time, and that because of its historical and cultural values has achieved the category of World Heritage.
I hope in another post to be able to tell you about some other site of interest in Cuba. Best regards.

Saludos cordiales.
