How many times have we promised ourselves we’d finish a project before the end of the afternoon, start going to the gym next Monday, or go out with our loved ones to that place we’ve been longing to visit—only to break those promises a few days, or sometimes even hours, later? In our culture, commitments have been downplayed to such an extent that they’ve lost their seriousness. We are extremely careful with the words we say to others, often fearing the judgment of others, but we tend to systematically neglect the words we say to ourselves.

We often don’t realize that every time we break an internal or external promise without a valid reason, we are gradually eroding our self-respect. Our word is the “gold” with which we build our identity and our reality. When it loses value in our own eyes, we lose confidence in our ability to take action.

We might think that commitments only exist when there’s a contract involved or when another person is involved. If we tell our partner that we’ll meet at 8:00 p.m., we’ll clearly make an effort to be on time; the same is true if we have a task to complete and commit to turning it in to our boss on time. But when we promise ourselves we’ll get up at 5:00 a.m. and hit the snooze button four times, we’re the only witness to breaking that promise. This is where the greatest danger lies. Since we think “it’s no big deal” because no one found out, our subconscious receives the message that “the promises I make to myself don’t matter.” What we say or think constitutes a declaration of intent that shapes our psyche. Honoring the small commitments we make to ourselves strengthens our self-esteem and our inner confidence.

Some people wonder where it went, but self-respect isn’t lost overnight. It fades away little by little through small acts of failure that accumulate over time. Every phrase we say counts: “I’ll do it tomorrow” or “I’ll finish it later”—knowing that we probably won’t, we’re engaging in the ultimate form of self-deception.

This behavior creates a profound contradiction. On the one hand, we want to see ourselves as competent, disciplined, and trustworthy people, but our actions prove otherwise. The gap between who we say we are and how we act creates a sense of guilt, frustration, and a gradual loss of personal dignity. We become someone who cannot be trusted. How can we expect the world to trust us if we don't believe our own words?

Systematically breaking our word undoubtedly affects and damages our interpersonal relationships. Repeatedly letting others down sends a message of indifference and unreliability. True relationships are built on the predictability of trust. If we are unreliable, the people around us learn not to take what we say seriously. Failing to follow through while feeling guilty inside creates a dynamic of emotional distance. Keeping one’s word is not just an act of social courtesy. A person who respects themselves highly values other people’s time and expectations.

Despite all this, life doesn’t exactly make things easy for us either. We often have to deal with unpredictable circumstances that are completely beyond our control—a sudden illness, a family emergency, or things that are out of our hands and can derail our plans. In these cases, breaking a promise doesn’t mean a lack of self-respect, but it would be good to handle it appropriately. How?

Distinguishing Between an Excuse and a Reason: When we make excuses, we are trying to avoid responsibility through manipulation or lies; a legitimate reason acknowledges human limitations in the face of reality.
Transparent Communication: When we are prevented from fulfilling a commitment for any reason, we should explain the situation clearly, without playing the victim, and seek possible alternatives.
Mature self-compassion: Trying to control the uncontrollable is a form of arrogance. Self-respect means accepting our biological and circumstantial limitations with grace and resilience.

How could we rethink our commitment? By creating a word that is both impeccable and flexible. We don’t need super-perfection, but rather a conscious restructuring. Before saying “yes,” assess whether you truly have the energy, the mental space to sustain it, and a realistic chance of following through. Honor the process over the result; intention and honest effort nurture self-respect. If you realize that you won't be able to fulfill a promise you made, you can renegotiate the deadline, which shows that you still value the original agreement and respect the context.
