Meditation with a Muse

I've been a daily meditator for at least half a decade, mostly Vipassana(mindfulness meditation) but some expeirmentation with Kundalini and other deviations of the like.
I've incorporated Binaural beats, white/pink noise, Icaros(S. American Shaman songs), pyschdelics and cannabis(in areas where it was legal), as well as metronomes(to help with rhythmic breathing) and assorted apps as well.


With that said, while my partner and I were out running Sunday errands I noticed the Muse brainwave headset and I was immediately intrigued.

I'm thinking about picking one up and doing a daily check in, utilizing the brainwave tracking tech and giving updates on how it's working and it's effects on my daily practice.

Do you think that would be interesting? I'd love some feedback, does this sound like an interesting project? Does anyone out there have any experience using Muse or another type of brainwave tracking device?

My tentative plan is to incorporate it into my daily meditation and ritual use, I'm especially interested to see if it plays nice with Headspace, which I'm currently loving - I just got a year subscription.


What Type of Meditation does Muse teach?

Muse's guided exercises help you discover how Muse’s real-time audio feedback assists you in learning focused-attention
meditation using the breath as a focus point. This scientifically-validated technique is great for beginners and included as a
starting point in many different traditions.
Muse's introductory sessions cover different techniques and exercises that help you build a consistent practice with Muse.
The "Meditation with Muse" introductory course in the Muse app offers guided exercise sessions which help you explore different breathing exercises and find the one that works for you.


What is it measuring?

Muse detects a full range of brainwave activity. Brainwaves are typically broken up into five bands and the Muse headband is capable of detecting all five bands. The five bands are:

  • Delta waves which are most present during deep sleep.
  • Theta waves which are associated with drowsiness, light sleep, and visualization.
  • Alpha waves which occur during wakeful relaxation.
  • Beta waves which occur when alert, actively thinking or problem-solving.
  • Gamma waves which occur when involved in higher mental activity and consolidation of information.
    In creating the Muse app, we started from these brainwaves and then spent years doing intensive research on higher-order combinations of primary, secondary and tertiary characteristics of raw EEG data and how they interact with focused-attention meditation.
    Your brain is constantly generating electrical signals when you’re thinking, sleeping or even relaxing. These signals can be detected from outside your head, via sensors.
    Muse uses the same brain sensing technology that doctors and scientists have employed for more than a century to detect your brain signals, similar to how a heart monitor measures your pulse. Muse then sends that feedback to your smartphone or tablet using Bluetooth connectivity.
    The headband has 7 finely calibrated sensors – 2 on the forehead, 2 behind the ears plus 3 reference sensors – which detect and measure the activity of your brain.
