metaphor-1209691_1920.jpgI scared everyone the day I fainted. It was a particularly scary incidence because it came out of nowhere. I was fourteen years old and It was the year 1997. Alone with my mum in our flat in Abuja, I was in a free and happy mood. My two older siblings were in Lagos on holiday. Mum was in the bathroom preparing to go to work and I was about to eat yam porridge which she had asked me to prepare by myself.

As I put one spoon of the food in my mouth, it burned my tongue. I was worried that It must have given my mouth blisters. I stood up, went to put on the fan, and came back to the table. Some of the food I had swallowed burned my throat and I felt the muscles there pull and my neck twist to the left like a chicken that was suffering from meningitis. I was overcome with fear as I got up to meet my mom at the bathroom door. Just as I was about to tell her that something strange was happening to my neck, I passed out.

I woke up naked, with my back on the floor, seeing a lot of adults gathered round me. With voices saying: "he is waking up", "Thank you Jesus", "Lord we thank you" and so on. After resting for some minutes, I was able to explain what happened before my black out. Some people said it was convulsion while others said it could not be, that I was past the age for that.

About an hour later, we were in Garki general hospital which was in area 7. We saw a doctor to whom I explained everything that had happened and he referred us to Wuse general Hospital. When we got there, the psychiatrist wanted to know if I had experienced convulsions when I was younger, if there was a history of mental illness in the family and so on.
At the end of the day, she prescribed some drugs and told us everything was okay. I did not know what the drugs were for and I did not ask.

This is the only time I have ever fainted. I plan to see a psychiatrist soon to understand what it was all about.
