'Tango Criollo' was a prize-winning English sequence tango composed by H. Clarke in London in 1924. The popular tune soon acquired many versions and arrangements, as well as different versions of the lyrics.

Russian actress Strongilla Irtlach (1902-1983) was also an unsurpassed performer of gypsy songs and romances and chanson; the song “There opened a pub...” was one of the greatest masterpieces underground chanson in Russia in the 1930-es, and its best performance undoubtedly belongs to Irtlach. I think you will see the genetic similarity with 'Creole Tango' for yourself.

For those who not in the know of this intresting project, just in brief: this was a commercial project to record cover versions of famous hits, performed by girls with no fame or stardom in their baggage, not familiar with the original songs versions (which provided some kind of a fresh interpretation). The final product was fun to listen to a few times.
I make this blog most likely for myself; I'll be surprised if anyone will be impressed and interested in this historical quest "find the roots of a certain tune" as I am...
