Well, I'd say this shot looks authentic (to some extension). Although Dostoevsky described the reality of the 1880s — Russia during the reign of Emperor Alexander II — his characters lived and worked mostly in cheaper apartment buildings. This particular building is most likely a later construction, circa 1900s or 1910s, and and housed a wealthier tenants - but from a distant perspective, the difference is not very significant. =)
The appeal of St. Petersburg is that it has preserved and protected the compact historical center of the imperial capitol (not like London or Moscow). If one ignore the parked cars, wires, neon signs, and lights, he can travel back in time.
