Ladoga skerries #6.

moss & lichens paradise

Let me share with you some observations on the northern nature. These pictures I captured at Ladoga skerries -- a beautiful land, comparable with the fiords of Norway. One may decide its just wind and rocks and lead-grey-water which is dull and boring, and no great species divercity inherent to the generous nature of the south .. it is not true.

Some spots (little hollows on granite plateaus, that accumulate water) feel like a real pillows, huge feather beds! We put our tent at such spots when it was possible ;)

Here is a typical landscape: mosses and lichens prevail. And a pine trees, as well: only their powerful roots are capable to deal with granite and help to resist to the winds.

There is no nutritious soil here (or very little amounts of it, at the wind / water protected spots), thus succulents survive well - they agree to be content with such environment. This is one of the most wide-spread and noticeable ones. There are no cacti here - it's too cold for them.

This is how the soil development looks like - slowly, over the years, plants conquer the territory from the cliff. Lichens and mosses appear first, they cling to cracks and bumps of the rock, grow and die, leaving a droplet of decent soil behind. Mushrooms and bacteria process dead foliage and wood. And when theres already a certain amount of soil, after the most undemanding settlers, there appear the others.

This is how Pine trees survive on the granite rocks.

Lédum palústre (aka 'Labrador tea') forms entire forests at these islands. Fortunately, they are short and not as impassable as the jungle... and they are very fragrant: if you inhale the smell of rosemary for a long time, your head may hurt ... you lose consciousness ... fall into these thickets, and the plants entangle you and will eat alive! (pk, just kidding)

Those moss pillows were maturing here for decades, thats for sure. And some lichens, probably, are contemporaries of Disraeli or John Adams! They grow for hundreds and hundreds years.

This is UPO - unidentified planting object. Must be rare, as I 've seen it only a few times. Very tender creature!

A silk grass. I was lucky to happen at the right time, when it was 'blossom' and it was the most photo-friendly.

Lichens of all sorts feel very comfortable, and grew everywhere: stones, trunks, more stones...

They have nor rivals, neither enemies... except of other lichens, of course.

Hey, look here: I found a fallen mountain troll! and it seems that stripes still grow on his head. Those are the biggest and the fattest lichens I have ever seen in my life. Sadly, I was limited and didnt borrow my macro lens to this trip!

Look, we found a sundew here!! (Росянка in 'Russian'). This rare predatory plant, which hunts after mosquitoes and midges, is quite common at the Ladoga skerries - there is a suitable environment (a bare, barren land).

A whole meadows of thyme grow and bloom here -- an unforgettable sight! I picked up a small supply for our household, but unfortunately this is not the most often used spice at our kitchen.

I cant say I personally always prefer moss to roses... well, at times... and, uhm, sometimes it is the best option around, to please your girlfriend! Oh, and this sort of moss is very useful: it can serve as a good fertilizer to invigorate the ground in which she grows her violets. Sounds like an ad, isnt it? ok, this is a land of mushrooms (see other posts) and berries (special post will follow) but let me round up here. I hope you enjoyed this little trip across the harsh northern nature -- it has its own beauty, just different.
