When I noticed the contest advertisement and read the guides I was actually confused. Confused and even considering I should not enter it... but I really wanted to, cause its such a nice subject! it really clicked me.
Our fourth contest is more relatable to our everyday lives and is much closer to home.
The problem is, I dont have anything even close to ideal or simply a good one, that I could present! And lending other's pictures from #usplash and #pixabay, talking about what I see there, what I like and dislike - er.... well, its not my sort of original and creative content that I bring in to the blockchain, tho I admit that it may be legit too... ofc, to some extention.
So. The problem is I have no such a great livable comfortable space I could happily present... The part of the problem is, that I am not an office worker, at my recent jobs my occupation is close to production zone pretty much, and all the conditions ... err.... Let me say that they leave a lot to be desired (although really, it's survival).
For a few days I left it in my mind for some extra maturing... and background thinking process helped me to decide that I do have something in my pocket to build a story around it. For the long time, I was being a fan of other folk's interior design, and from time to time I was saving the living interiors that catched my eye into a special folder. Nope, its not necessarily offices or working spaces - the accent is: they are personal spaces.. . very thick and solid accent. So, I invite you on a little curious walk.

Paris, 1947 - wonderful shot by Robert Doisenau. This is simple, but amazing. And it was the 1st thing that came to my mind, actually - mostly, due to the name of the publication, where I noticed it in the very 1st time: "Old-fashioned laptop'. I guess, no further comments needed, you may figure out all the rest yourself. Its a very pleasurable and totally adjustable mobile office -- and amazing workspace! The best of them all... (or is it just the best photo?.. I may be highly biased, as I am a long-time obsessed with good photography...)
Again, Paris - this time 1948. Uncredited photo. Working space of a Russian book-seller. I can imagine how this can be my dream workspace and a daily office - meeting intresting folks, sorting and examining excellent stuff everyday... with a cup of coffee in a French style, from time to time :P
The perfect workspace of a sound engineer or sound / electronic music researcher: a huge, full-wall shelving unit with deep shelves - plenty of room for both books and cassette boxes, and a bigger desk. Note the massive seatpost -- its very important, dont save on it, as you will spent most of your working hours sitting there, in comfort, or without it. / Идеальное место: огромный, во всю стену, стеллаж, с глубокими полками - места точно хватит и под книги, и под коробки с кассетами.
Black and white posters is the main remedy used to convert this (probably a dull) space into pleasurable and inspirational working space. This is the artists / designers / photographers way.
Когда наличное пространство не очень подходит для жизни и работы, как его обустроить, если тебе самому приходится умещаться... татами (съемное), кошка (мобильная), побольше белого цвета на стены, ноутбук вместо десктопа, и маленькая книжная полка - помогает отбирать только самые главные книги!
When the available space isn't great for living and working in, how do you arrange it if you have to fit yourself in... A tatami (removable), a cat (mobile), add more white color on the walls (it will expand your space), use a laptop instead of a desktop, and limit yourself to a small bookshelf - it helps to select only the most important books to live with.
When there's not enough room for your books anymore... / Когда места для книг уже не хватает...
A luxurious living (and working) environment with a vintage style. I like everything about this environment, sign me in! Just add a coffee-making machine, or jezzwa facility... where should I sign the contract? / Роскошная жилая (и рабочая) среда, выдержанная в винтажном стиле.
I'll continue with my own photos. This is the flat of Michael Sapego, publisher, art collector and music producer. He is my friend and employer, and I have visited his place a lot in recent years (so all the photos are mine). His flat consists of two rooms only plus a tiny kitchen,-- it serves as a bedroom, an office for receiving guests and a talking room, a warehouse for his printed books handy storage, an exhibition space for keeping and admiring all those wonderful vintage things he collects... and even can be considered a museum! The last but not least: its a place for working on book projects with hired book designers and layout specialists (like me).
Я продолжу своими собственными фото. Это квартира Майкла Сапего - издателя, коллекционера искусства, музыкального продюсера. Он мой друг и наниматель, я часто бывал у него в последние годы (поэтому фото мое собственное, в качестве исключения). Его квартира - это всего две комнаты, которые служат спальней, офисом для приема гостей и переговорной комнатой, складским помещением для хранения отпечатанных книжных тиражей, выставочным пространством для хранения и любования всех тех замечательных винтажных вещей, которые он коллекционирует... и не в последнюю очередь - местом для работы над книгами с наемными верстальщиками.
Стены украшены картинами, постерами проведенных выставок, огромным флагом СССР (страны, в которой мы оба родились и жили, но которая исчезла с карт в 1991 году). И я должен сказать, что свободного места на стенах - нет! Комната с телевизором - это спальня и переговорная. Обратите внимание на вертикальные книжные шкафы слева, а также тумбочки в центре и справа - они хранят необъятное количество бумаг, фотографий, документов, которые сопровождают издательскую деятельность.
The walls are decorated with paintings, posters of exhibitions held, and a huge flag of the USSR (the country we were both born and lived in, but which disappeared from the maps in 1991). And I have to say that there is no free space on the walls! The room with the TV is the bedroom and meeting room. Note the vertical bookcases on the left and the nightstands in the centre and right - they hold the immense amount of papers, photographs and documents that accompany publishing.
Вторая комната содержит всего один небольшой книжный шкаф, груды картин и ящиков складированы вдоль стен. На мой взгляд, пространству необходимо больше стеллажей, но стеллажи загораживают стены, на них не повесить картин - картины должны напоминать о прошлых и будущих проектах, радовать глаз и вдохновлять! Таковы приоритеты. В правой части фото вы видите уголок рабочего стола. Компьютер, музыкальный центр, сканер - и большой монитор (это на самом деле мой собственный монитор, который я перенес сюда для регулярной работы, вместо маленького и старого монитора который имел плохую цветопередачу). Вот и всё, что нужно для работы над книгами! Ах да, еще конечно нужен опыт и знания :)))
The second room contains just one small bookcase, with piles of pictures and drawers stacked along the walls. In my opinion, the space needs more shelving, but the shelving blocks the walls, you can't hang pictures on them - pictures should remind you of past and future projects, be pleasing to the eye and inspiring! Those are the priorities. On the right-hand side of the photo you can see a corner of the desk. A computer, a music playing center, a scanner - and a big monitor (this is actually my own monitor that I moved here for regular work, instead of the small and old monitor that had a poor colour rendering). That's all you need to work on your books! Oh yes, you also need experience and knowledge of course :)))
На мой взгляд -- этому пространству остро не хватает света, открытых окон, глядящих на городские крыши. Да, нельзя охватить необъятное... Когда нужно что-то сфотографировать (для книги), приходится использовать искусственный свет светильника, что дает бедные результаты... Расскажу еще про один необычный элемент обстановки, который на 150% отлично вписался в рабочее пространство. Это винтажный китайский резной деревянный сундук для хранения одежды. Сапего нашел его в магазине, дождался пока его уценят, купил и хранит в нем... конечно, не одежду - он хранит в нем свои книги, отпечатанные тиражи. А я использую крышку сундука как фон, когда нужно сфотографировать какие-нибудь небольшие вещицы. Он очень благоприятствует - роскошный фон!
In my opinion -- this space sorely lacks light, open windows looking out over the city rooftops. Yes, you can't capture the immensity... When you need something to photograph (for a book) you have to use artificial light, which gives poor results... I'll tell you about another unusual furnishing item, which is 150% perfect for the workspace. It's a vintage Chinese carved wooden storage chest. Sapego found it in a shop, waited for a discount, bought it and is storing in it... not clothes, of course - he keeps his books, his print runs in it. And I use the lid of the chest as a backdrop when I need to photograph some small items. It's very conducive - a gorgeous backdrop!
У меня для вас есть совет: окружайте себя старыми вещами, пусть они поношенные и поцарапанные, зато они сделаны с любовью (раньше, до эпохи индустриализации, мастера вкладывали больше любви в произведения своих рук...)
#2 .:. my personal non-office hideout / мой укромный уголок
Одно из моих рабочих мест - увы, далеко не идеальное. Это моя прошлая работа, где я выполнял разнообразные функции, в том числе резчика книжных и бумажных изделий и пост-печатника. Моё участие в оформлении этого места минимально - от меня зависели такие параметры как: а) выбор постеров на стенах; б) место с коробками для отходов (резаной бумаги), в) куда мне класть скотч, ручку и калькулятор... вот и всё!
And this is my last working space I had before the C-19 (not of an office type, hehe) - alas, it was far from ideal. It's my former job where I've held a variety of roles, including book and paper cutter operator and post-printing finishing operator. My involvement in the design of the place was minimal - it was up to me to a) choose posters on the walls, b) choose where to put the cutted waste paper containers, c) choose where I should put the tape, pen and calculator... and that's it! This spot had some benefits, too. It was located near the backdoor fire exit which I could use late at night... or use it any time for extra ventilation.
Удивительно, сколько интересного и полезного матерьяла может уместиться в маленькой комнате. Два стеллажа для бумаги, готовой продукции, запасных расходных материалов и пост-печатного оборудования... Четыре стола - место для раскладывания полуфабрикатов отпечатанных тиражей и для самих пост-печатных процессов... и свободное место под столами - для хранения бумажных обрезков, которые я накапливал и продавал, примерно раз в год.
It's amazing how much interesting and useful material can fit into a small room. Two shelves for paper, finished products, consumables and postpress equipment... Four tables provide space for semi-finished prints and the post-printing process itself... and free space under the tables - for storing paper scraps, which I accumulated and sold, about once a year.
The main thing in today's office is the internet, a good bandwidth connection, right? // Главное в современном офисе - интернет, не так ли?
Yasuko Otany's work space. She is amateur musician and a great music fan from Japan. Its not ideal in my opinion, but it corresponds with what I have, as well.
Tokyo Style. Photo (c) Tsuzuki Kyoichi. This is perhaps not working space but rather a living space (note tatami on the left), but I decided to add it, cause it clicks me - fascinating! Just change all those VHS piles for books... and make a color change. I wish I knew what is the outer cityscape look like behind the window. It may be one of the most sufficient parts of this case.
Keith Richard's working space. Seems he's fond of working in horisontal position - quite notable! A lot of decent vintage wood stuff in environment.... And the wall-size book shelves all around. My type of things!
Рабочее место композитора (или меломана?..) На самом деле, нет. Я видел фотографию рабочего места известного русского электронного композитора Арсеньева - оно выглядело совсем не так, огромное количество разных синтезаторов не свалены друг на друга, а расставлены по стенам комнаты... на них можно играть музыку, а на этих - нет. Это просто красивое постановочное фото! Я добавил его, чтобы закончить мой пост на этой приятной нотке.
The workplace of a composer (or melomaniac?...) Actually, no. I saw a picture of the workplace of the famous Russian electronic composer Arseniev - it looked quite different, a huge number of different synthesizers not piled on top of each other, but arranged along the walls of the room... you can play music on them, but you can't play music on these. It's just a beautifully staged photo! I added it to end my post on that nice note.
