Email and cell phone text messages are generally considered much more casual forms of communication. This attitude can make a writer feel that even the simplest grammar rules are optional. Messages often contain incomplete sentences, misspelled words, and abbreviations. Formal methods of address such as greetings or closings are also neglected. However, assuming that a casual tone is acceptable can leave the message vulnerable to misunderstanding or even giving offense.
One common problem is that grammar software can misplace modifying phrases so that they change the writer’s intended meaning. As such, writers who know their English grammar rules are much more effective at monitoring their own writing for mistakes.
There Is More to Writing Than Writing
Writing the simplest interoffice communications can go horribly wrong if the writer misses a word or overlooks a grammar or spelling error. Even texting, although its format means the writer needs to use abbreviation with greater frequency, should be double-checked for accuracy before sending.
