āMy phone is my lifeā is the most used phrase in this 21st century, especially by the Gen Alphas and the Gen Z baddies. When i hear people utter this statement in the past, especially this present generation, i see it as nothing more than hypocrisy of the highest level, and thatās because i feel and know thereās more to life than being confined to a small screen that performs several functions. What do you mean by your phone is your life? Donāt you have a life outside it? Canāt you do other interesting things offline? Why must it be your phone always? These were the questions i usually ask back thenā¦
I got several answers from the people around me back then, but then non of them still made sense to me, i saw everything as an excuse to be lazy. That was the best definition I could give to their unhealthy obsession with their phones. I was like this until i had a taste of their life years ago, this should be around 6-7 years ago when i was gifted a phone. My very first phone was a hand me down NOKIA 3310 phone, this was a phone that was brought back to life many years after it went into extinction. This time it came back better and advanced, it even had a browser that could facebook and do other stuffs like google searches, a button phone, crazy stuff right š? Oh yeah. This was the phone i was giftedā¦
In a week i already opened a facebook account for myself to see what life is being enjoyed over there. My classmates Facebook usernames were the first set of names that was suggested to me to add up immediately I finished setting up my account, and just like that i added all of them in a flash. Two weeks later i already had over a hundred friends. Chatting became more interesting and before i knew it i became glued to my phone. Facebook got me hooked big time back then, and just like that I became a lost causeā¦
It was at this point i realized the life over there was a whole different life, it was more interesting with friends. Gradually, my narrative started changing and before i knew it, i became part of the my phone is my life geng. In summary, my phone is still my life till date, thereās no Fox without his phoneā¦
When it comes to banning of phones in my home, I donāt think i have ever considered something like that, and thatās mainly because even i as a person, I canāt do without my phone. So if i canāt do without my phone, do you think my siblings will be able to do without it? No, they wonātā¦
The only set of people who can and will always have a thought like this are my parents. Oh yeah, i think this is something almost all Nigerian parents have in common. If they have their way, seizing our phones when itās time for dinner or family movie is something they can never get tired of doing, and thatās exactly because we have abused that device too muchā¦
Now they see it as nothing other than a source of distraction, especially to youths. I think banning of phones during periods like this is normal, especially if itās a hinderance to bonding and connection. Doing something like this is fair, but then I doubt such thing can still be done in a century like this. Who still does family movie night in a century like this, lol. We donāt do something like this in my family, so thatās outā¦
Even family dinner is something we havenāt done in years, lol. Na rich people dey get family dinner and movie nights, no be for middle class family like us, lol. Where we wan see am šā¦
In conclusion, infringement of rights is far from a country like ours, if our governments arenāt following through on something like this, do you think our parents would give a damn about a right like infringement of rights?, especially when itās concerning their family, Lol, dey play. This is not applicable to Nigerian parentsā¦
