The Two Sides of Tragedy: Between Moral Misery and True Solidarity

Another day of sleeping poorly, with my nerves on edge and tears always threatening to come out, facing the helplessness of not being able to do more. Dark circles that no makeup can hide. These days several years have fallen on me, and it's normal, if we love our country and what is happening here. I have tried to write about other things, to participate in initiatives, but I can't. My head, my thoughts are only on my country.
Yesterday I could only write something, but it was a personal topic that also had me feeling a bit down. Anyway, what I am getting at...
Tragedies have a very particular way of stripping us bare as a society. They function as an uncomfortable but highly precise mirror, where the seams of who we truly are are projected, without filters or embellishments.
In the face of a catastrophe, when the ground shakes and vulnerability makes us all equal, there is no room for appearances. It is there where, simultaneously, both sides of the same coin emerge: the shadow of the worst human miseries and the radiant light of those who still uphold the dignity of an entire country.
On one hand, we come face-to-face with realities that generate deep indignation鈥攁 mixture of anger and shame that is hard to process. It is painful to see how indolence and a disconnection from the pain of others manifest in daily life under the guise of the so-called "viveza criolla" (sly opportunism).
It is truly shameful to see the state of some donations that certain citizens hand in for the victims. It is inadmissible that in a moment of maximum urgency, where people have lost everything, there are those who use collection centers to get rid of what is no longer useful in their homes. There have been reports of donations of torn shoes, completely without soles, dirty, stained, and foul-smelling clothes, and even underwear in the worst imaginable conditions.

In other cases, a total lack of judgment and empathy becomes evident when people send high-heeled shoes, graduation suits, or dirty sheets that contribute absolutely nothing to someone sleeping in an improvised shelter.
Even worse is finding expired food that poses a health risk, or learning that the drinking water generously donated by Empresas Polar for the shelters is being sold by unscrupulous people. Turning a victim's thirst into a profit-making opportunity is not cleverness; it is profound moral misery.

But the lack of judgment also swings to the opposite extreme, falling into the absurdity of certain collection centers where some volunteers demand that all donated aid must be strictly new and with tags. In the midst of the emergency, they forget that citizen solidarity thrives on generosity and selflessness, not on the ability to go to a store and buy brand-new clothes. Neither waste nor elitist demands have a place when the priority is saving lives. Those actions, and those who carry them out, do not represent the essence of who we are.
Fortunately, that is not the only story being written. In the midst of all this chaos, there are recycling workshops, such as El Taller Neo and the UCAB recycling center, among others, that receive these donations in poor condition鈥攁s long as they are clean鈥攑ass them through shredding machines, and turn them into pet beds, pillows, and cushions for the victims.

Right alongside that shadow coexists the other side of the coin: that of good-hearted Venezuelans. They are the true moral reserve of the country鈥攎en and women who, armed only with their hands, their unwavering faith, and an immense desire to help, have completely thrown themselves into the disaster zones.

While a few take advantage of the situation or profit from necessity, these unsung heroes have not stopped digging, carrying supplies, and offering comfort. Their effort has been so persistent and dedicated that today, thirteen long days after the tragedy, they are still working miracles, finding and rescuing living people who remained trapped under the rubble. Every life saved at this point is a testament to the triumph of the human will over adversity.
It is these people, the ones who fill their hands with dirt to save a stranger, the ones who share the little they have with absolute purity of heart, who truly define the identity of our land.
In the end, the reconstruction that awaits us is not just a task of cement, bricks, and engineering; it is, above all, a reconstruction of values. It is up to us to decide, consciously and collectively, which of the two sides of the coin we will hand the future of the country to, making it clear that indolence no longer has a place among us and that true solidarity is our only path.
